Donated Dell computers

We received several donated Dell computers which had the hard drives wiped clean. Is it legal to use the green license key sticker on the computer to install XP or a Dell reinstall cd? If so, where can I see it in writing just to cover my butt?

Assuming nobody else is using the XP licenses elsewhere (which is a violation of the EULA), the Dell OEM licenses are stuck with these PCs forever. So, yeah, you can re-install XP. The COA Key on the side of the computers won't actually be used in the re-install, assuming you are using Dell OEM media for the installation.

As far as documentation, you can install one copy and and read the EULA.TXT file that is installed. Or you can take a look at Microsoft's Piracy web sites for OEM licensing requirements.

The license is tied permanently to the computer. If you have a Dell branded WinXP disc of the same version licensed to the machine you will not be prompted for a key. If you use a generic disc then you will be prompted for a key but the key on the sticker will not work because MS invalided them several years back to deter piracy. In this situation you could contact MS to obtain a replacement disk and key but you will have to pay for it.

You may be able to obtain media from Dell directly also which will not require key to install. You will only need one media. Another solution would be to build your own disc with OEM activation using a generic XP disc.
