Republican Don Young from Alaska, referred to Latino farm workers as 'wetbacks' - a racial slur that has put him and his party in hot water.

He said, “My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,..."

What a retard! This old fart seems to think this is still pre-1950.

The Republicans came down swiftly on Young for his insensitive remarks. Boehner, McCain, Preibus etc. all condemned his statement.

He offered a non-apology saying that word isn't used nowadays and he is sorry if people were offended.

The Republicans will have a LONG way to go before getting any minority group to really support them with ticks like Young stuck firmly on their stage.

Ugh...

Hi, welcome to a time period you haven't lived in. But nice try on thinking you have.

I have an 85 year old uncle that still throws around the n word when referring to any black. It was what they grew up with, it was the way it was. Stupid 17 year old's that pop out into this world during a timeframe of homosexuals wanting to marry can't even scratch the surface of growing up without an iPhone

Him, yes, his party, no. Oh wait, huffpo..carry on. Only a complete idiot takes what he said and paints an entire party with saying it.

This guy knows better, and it doesn't matter if it was a term used waaay back in his day, it is still a racially offensive term.

I really wonder about some of these elected officials, what world do they live in?

Yeah, now you can call them citizen wetbacks.
Yes, my statement could be considered insensitive or offensive.
I don't think Rep. Young meant any hate for Mexicans, I think he is just using an outdated word, like negro.

This is probably the dumbest fucking excuse for something that i've seen on ATPN yet.

Addressing the United States' jobs situation in a radio interview with KRBD-FM,

If he's gotten to the point that he can't "hold himself back" in a radio interview, then it's probably time to quit.

Doesn't that just illustrate the entire point that much of the GOP is completely out of touch with modern America and still carrying views that died decades ago?

I cut your grandfather a lot of slack based on his upbringing, doesnt make him less ignorant in modern times.

Yes and it highlights a problem with the GOP, they aren't insensitive they just aren't aware. The rep used the term wetbacks because he grew up were that word was commonly used. Did he use it because he hates Mexicans? I don't think so, or at least I will give him the benefit of the doubt. But it shows that he, as well as republicans, aren't even aware of what's offensive or the hardships people face and they continue to display their ignorance with examples like this, and women's reproduction rights, immigration issues, and things relating to government social safety nets.

Are they insensitive? I don't think so but they are extremely ignorant (which is also displayed by conservative followers as seen many times here on P&N).

I'm sure the man is stupid enough to still believe those "wetbacks" are going to be deported some day. And that their 30 million plus friends and family won't be a very pissed off voting block.

Someone should ask him how he feels about slurs on other minorities, then ask him what the difference is. He'll probably say they're not American, or they're temporary. Reality is not his friend. Frankly, he's in some poor Alaskan backwater. You guys should invite him to LA sometime. :awe:

Hmmm, here we have a Republican who provided jobs and paychecks to many Latino people and he is the racist one? What have any of you done to directly help the life of an immigrant? You guys preach tolerance on a internet forum. That counts towards something, right?
