When you run a word like that to the ground, especially in the context of comedy, you desensitize it to the point that it's lost all meaning. The word ho has not bite left in it, no matter how hard you grasp for straws here. If Imus wanted to really hurt someone's feelings he could have used a handful of stronger words with the same meaning: whore, slut, skank, c*nt, etc.

Just because it gets used a lot in rap music it's suddenly mainstream slang to call a woman a ho? The two are not synonomous. You're apparently failing to realize that even though rappers use it to refer to women, doesn't mean they don't use it in a derogatory way. What did these women do to deserve being called whores? Not a single person has answered that. There is no answer. The best you could come up with in the other post is "ho doesn't mean whore".

It is mainstream. It does not make it right, but blame MTV for allowing it to be used on prime time all these years. They saw fit to censor the n word, along "bitch" and the PG rated curses. For Christ's sake to word ho has been used on Jeopardy with no censorship:

http://www.jibjab.com/jokebox/jokebox/jibjab/id/187114/jokeid/56247

Didn't see anyone taking offense to the use of the word there. Prime time TV no less. Quick call Rev Al, Alex Trebek is a racist. That cracker-ass-cracker!

Funny enough, not ONE variation of the word means simply "woman". You don't seem to understand that the setting for where it is used has a lot more to do with it than how mainstream it is. Would you go to a black tie dinner party and introduce your girlfriend as "this is my ho"? No, you wouldn't.

Same way I would not introduce her as my old lady, squeeze, or lover. WTF is your point? There's a time and a place for everything, and IMO a black tie event is no place for slang. I also would not curse or use the words cool, awesome, etc at such an event.

The word might be mainstream, but it doesn't make it any more acceptable to call a person. You cried in the other thread about Chris Rock calling people Crackers and stuff... but does him doing it make it right? Suddenly Chris Rock calls a person a cracker and insulting someone is perfectly acceptable because Chris did it first?

I didn't cry about Chris Rock using the word cracker. I take zero offense from it. Like ho, the term cracker has been run to the ground in comedy that it is basically meaningless at this point. Any white person who takes offense from the word cracker is in the same "looking to be offending" boat the Rutgers b-ball team and Rev Al.

I can fully agree that the argument has blown well past what it should have been, but if you're going to sit there and say that it's perfectly acceptable to call a group of women "hos" on national broadcasts, then I don't believe you have any respect for women.

It's perfectly acceptable as long as non-crybaby trolls looking to be offended don't go running to Rev Al and crying racism. I don't know a woman in my life who would take offense to being called a hoe. When the word is used 95% of the time in a comedic context, the word itself becomes comedic and stripped of its barbs. Call my wife a ho and she'll laugh at you. Call her a c*nt and she'll probably knock your teeth out.

I'm sick of all the reverse discrimination that goes on. How do think these new concepts would fly;
1. The united WHITE college fund.
2. WHITE history month.
3. All WHITE colleges.
Those would crash and burn pretty fast, and they should. Jackson and Sharpton would have the entire black community in the streets rioting if some white person actually proposed those concepts. I'm no racist and I think Imus made a bad choice with that joke, but I just don't see it as a big deal. Black people mock white people in the public eye all the time without incident.

I'm sure some of these people have watched shows like american idol in the past where people get truly humiliated for entertainment.

Did Simon ever call anyone a Ho or Hos? Plus, how does criticizing an Idol contestant compare to criticizing the Rutgers women's bbal team who just lost in the NCAA finals?

Exactly. People go to the auditions knowing what Simon is like, and many of them expecting to be humiliated. Nothing about a championship basketball game asks for that.

So, now Imus was in the booth at the championship basketball game?

And people listen to Imus knowing what he is like as well. If not for Sharpton's rabble rousing on this issue it is likely that none of that team would have even been aware of what was said by some guy they are probably only peripherally aware of at best.

You've posted a very good point. I've never heard of this Don Imus guy until this sudden news event.

This is would be like calling me a "cracker", and then me not finding out about it until a week later and then suddenly becoming offended.
Please!

Yea, this whole situation is just crazy. Every black leader asking for Imus' head. In the meantime, you have black rappers dropping the "n" word and calling their women bitches and hoes. Yet, no black leader goes after them. This would be a great time for a black leader to step out and stay something about black entertainers using these words inappropriately now that the spotlight is on them. Instead, they are going after Imus.

Don't think I am a fan of Imus because I have heard him maybe 2-3 times. However, these actions from the black community speak louder than words. They don't care if their own race uses these words. They don't care if their own race belittles their women like that. The only thing that matters is if a white person says something like this.

This whole situation stinks pretty badly.

Who said I was? It's not my job.

I just sit back and look at the hypocrisy of the whole situation.

Just b/c I'm black doesn't mean that I should do/act/feel a certain way about something or advocate a certain point. I still laugh when people learn that I can't play basketball :p

And so called "black leaders" are doing nothing but harm race relations.

This kind of crap makes most people MORE racist because of the ridiculous double standard and "I'm a victim" mentality.

It's quite pathetic actually. Imus has been making fun of people and saying retarded &^%# for 35 years. That his thing, that's what he does.

I personally think he's an ass for calling the gorgeous Contessa Brewer Miss Piggy adn stupid... and she's an MSNBC employee. Why no calls for firing after that?:
Imus & Crew immediately lit into Contessa at the start of their morning show, saying traffic tie-ups in New York City were caused by her "BIG BUTT" being stuck in a tunnel and her "FAT ASS" being stuck in the door at Burger King.

"Why didn't she just keep her mouth shut?" Imus demanded. "Why would she bring this on herself? She knows how we are. SHE IS SO PAINFULLY STUPID. That's the reason I got rid of her. I'd ask her to explain a story she had read and she didn't have a clue."

They went on and on about how Contessa was ugly, comparing her to "Miss Piggy," and saying how she looked terrible in the tight outfits she wore.

"I don't think Amy (Robach) or any of those in the back have to worry about HER taking over the Today show."

"She is MSNBC's answer to Candy Crowley," said Bernard, Imus' producer, comparing Contessa to the heavy-set CNN reporter.
That being said, this is all being blown totally out of proportion and just allows Al Sharpton and his ilk to get black people fired up over sh!t they hear on the radio everyday or that the kids listen to or watch on TV. Calling for the guy to be fired? Pfffff

Here is what Howard Stern has to say about it:

Tuesday, April 10, 2007 11:17 a.m. EDT

Howard Stern to Imus: 'Say F**k You!'
Shock jock Howard Stern is no fan of embattled Don Imus, but he said he knows what his fellow talk show host should have told critics: "F**k you.?

"He's apologizing like a guy who got his first broadcasting job,? Stern told his Sirius Satellite Radio audience after Imus apologized for his derogatory comment about the Rutgers women?s basketball team.

"He should have said, "F**k you, it?s a joke.?

Former radio host Bob Grant ? no stranger to controversy ? also weighed in on the Imus flap, according to the New York Daily News.

Grant was fired from New York radio powerhouse WABC over a remark he made about Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, who was aboard a plane that crashed in Croatia in 1996. Grant told a caller: "My hunch is [Brown] is the one survivor. Maybe it?s because at heart I?m a pessimist.? After Brown was found dead, Grant?s WABC contract was terminated.

"Everything doesn?t come out the way you want,? he said regarding Imus? comment.

"There were many times when I?d be going home and say to myself, ?What the hell did I say that for?? But that?s the pace you work at. That?s what people don?t take into account.?

Stern could say what Imus said and not be in this predicament. Funny how that works.
