I've been enjoying family vacation in Punta Cana, DR, for the last several days. This island and its people have surprised me. I was always told Dominican Republic was dangerous and you can't leave your resort at all without being in extreme danger. That was a lie. I didn't expect to find the people so friendly and hard working. Granted, I'm just staying inside generic all inclusive resort so I'm only getting biased picture but the workers I've spoken to here all say that's complete BS. And I believe them. There is no island time service here. It's just as good or even better service than I receive in Mexico. Truly impressed with the friendliness of the people here. And people are beautiful. I can see why @amdhunter married Dominican lady.

Food is bit of disappointment so far. But I'm surprised to find people here do like spicy food. I was expecting everything bland but they will kick up the spice level if that's your preference.

I've been to Jamaica for example in pure 100% tourist mode (cruise ship) AND I've been to Jamaica in the company of a buddy who was born there and stayed with his family in a semi-sketchy part of Montego Bay.

Two completely polar-opposite experiences.

I can tell you with 100% confidence that while a white person hailing from "bum-fvck" Iowa could EASILY get in serious trouble in ANY big city, this nerdy looking white guy with extensive experience working in NYC did just fine in Jamaica. (don't look too rich AND be humble/polite = you'll usually be fine)

To be fair I was "introduced" to the people "in charge" in the neighborhood upon arrival and it was made VERY clear that I was not to be messed with because I was "family". Conversely even the local cops (more like soldiers lol) didn't show their faces there much unless invited!

Also note that MOST of the REALLY good bud never makes it off the island!

seems like it's mostly drugs and theft, though the reported homicide rate is 50% higher than Los Angeles per capita.

The touristy areas are always safer and better policed though to prevent bad press, since that could significantly hurt their economy.

LA isn't the murder capital of America ... that dubious honor belongs to St Louis MO & Baltimore MD (to the surprise of NOBODY thats been there!) BOTH beat out Kingston Jamaica and anywhere in the DR.

Detroit is the only other US city/state to tap the top 50 as of 2019 although I would bet Chicago joined it in 2020. San Juan PR = a territory rather than a state BUT it also makes the list.... and my "seat of the pants" experience visiting there was no problem either.

Mexico as a country = 6 out of the top 7 and is the murder capital of the world (2019).

I'm not believing any statistics from a 3rd world country that are not being independently reported/corroborated.

DR is a place where I would not leave my resort. Crime on DR resorts is way more prevalent than MX tourist areas - a simple search will lead you to a lot of horrific stories.
The other half of the DR island is Haiti which leads the world (outside of Africa & Middle East) in violence.

That’s the type of trips I prefer! This is probably the last time I book all inclusive. I booked this place so my daughter could experience all inclusive resort. Previously, I only took her to European plan hotels/resorts as that’s my preference.

This resort is less than 50% occupied so it’s real quiet and super relaxing which I really like. When I was in Cancun, Mexico, like 3 weeks ago, the hotel was packed. I had to fight to get pool chairs. Here, I can go anytime and practically have the pool and the beach to myself.

I loved my time in the DR!! I last went with my wife's family, and we stayed in an all inclusive resort. It was ok, but I don't think I'd go all inclusive resort again. The food was just ok, but the staff was great. They had someone take us around in a passenger van, and we didn't have the slightest concern. I'd go again.

Dibs on OPs stuff when the ransom note comes in.

Anyhow closest I would be willing to try in that region is Aruba. Went to Jamaica a few years back and Holy fucking shit what a shithole of epic proportions.

I've lived there more than a few times, we have a house down there, i've been there for a few long stays, we do not live on a resort although there is armed security at the gates of the area we live in, we have a few friends that have purchased land and built houses there, no security. I'm more worried of the drunk drivers out on the road after dark than anything else, lots of people on bikes with no lights/reflecters, people in a hurry, constant high beams.Driving during the day isn't that bad though, you'll get used to the bikes passing you on the left and the right (sometimes even at the same time)..I'll be headed back for a few months in the fall i hope, i really enjoy the food down there, the fish especially (i normally never eat it at home), have rarely had a bad meal there.

i loved DR. Loved the cocaine, prostitutes, army guys with shotguns on every corner, the recent military golpe, the sea, the food, the scammers, the cigars.
Not too happy about Ron Brugal 151.

Who said that? Not that I've spent as much time as KMFJD there but I never felt unsafe. It is the only place I was offered hard drugs multiple times on the beach though

My neighbors across the street swear by DR. But that is like the only place they have been other than Aruba with us one time. I personally don't have much interest in the DR just based on what I've heard/seen. They did say they drove around no problem though, they are spanish as well though so not sure if they felt more comfortable because of that.

I'm headed to PR in August but it's not really a spot I chose but more of a "lets go with another couple without kids" that my wife and her friend setup. I'd rather go somewhere else but I'm sure it'll be fun.

Similar to what @Captante said, when I went to Nicaragua with my wife and stayed with her family and what not in their home town in the middle of nowhere, it was almost like people were told not to fuck with me lol. But at the same time, it also made me feel like other people could take advantage of that situation.

All-inclusive resorts do have their place, however the only one I've vacationed at that I would consider going back to is Hedonism II !!! (yeah... THAT was a good time!)

;)

The only way I'll likely do a vacation where the schedule is "on rails" and mostly planned out for me is if I take another cruise. (which 5 years from now I might consider!)

You wild man!

I dabbled in the swingers scene up here in my 30's for a bit. Was tough as a single male but had some successes. Enough to have to some great stories out of it. AFF and SLS were the two websites I used primarily. Can't imagine what Hedonism was all about, would probably need to go with a partner though. A partner I was not in love with.

Not that I have an opinion one way or the other, but workers would have incentive to tell you it is safe of course. Scared people don't come back or suggest coming to friends and family.

Take your own assessment ... sounds like you were in agreement with them which is good, but I always apply a lot of scrutiny to opinions that come from people that could have reasons to spin things a certain way.

Some of my family used to live in the DR—when I visited I never really interacted with the tourist side of things. The people were kind, relaxed, and generous. I would love to go back.

I think I read about DR being dangerous from people like Dr. Detroit here. I read the same thing about Jamaica. I haven't been to Jamaica yet. Probably will go there soon.

Seaweed is bad in the Caribbean this year. There are tons here. It was bad in Playa Mujeres, Mexico, when I was there last month. So I know it's going to be bad in Cancun when I'm there next month as seaweed volume tend to peak around July and August.

i loved DR. Loved the cocaine, prostitutes, army guys with shotguns on every corner, the recent military golpe, the sea, the food, the scammers, the cigars.

I did my share of sampling the local ladies during my travels before I married. I was young, horny, and had lot of money to blow in my early 20s. Never did drugs though. But I got it all out of my system and quit cold turkey after I married.

Guys with machine guns and military standing guard and patrolling don't bother me. When I was in Cartagena and Bogota, I saw them everywhere. The only time I was nervous when I walked through some shady parts of the town/city late at night. Some of the alleyways and dimly lit narrow streets were pretty scary late at night. But it's no different than walking or driving through some shady parts of city/towns in the US. When I was in Austin, TX, earlier this year, I walked past many homeless tents. It was like every homeless person there owned a tent and every bridge underpasses were filled with homeless people in their tents. Some of the tent neighborhoods had multiple portable toilets I guess provided by the city of Austin for the homeless to use instead of urinating on the streets and walkways. It was eyeopening experience. I didn't know Austin, TX, had that bad of homeless problem.

I've lived there more than a few times, we have a house down there, i've been there for a few long stays, we do not live on a resort although there is armed security at the gates of the area we live in, we have a few friends that have purchased land and built houses there, no security. If I come back to DR, I'll probably rent Airbnb and rental car. I haven't had good fish here yet. But it's probably the resort I'm staying at. I like whole fried or grilled fish. I want the entire fish, the head, eyes, tail, and skin. All they have at this resort is filet of fish dressed up made to look pretty on the plate. I don't care about that. They're serving me things like salmon filets when I know that shit isn't local, and I can eat the same back at home anytime. When I was in Playa Mujeres, MX, couple weeks ago, I ate whole fried snapper, grouper, or whatever the fresh catch of the day was everyday for lunch. It was glorious. That's kind of stuff I want to eat.

I did have traditional Dominican breakfast this morning and I preferred that to the traditional American breakfast my wife received. But it seems like meat and starch diet is the dominant cuisine here instead of fresh fish and seafood. But again, that could just be the resort I'm staying at catering to American tourists who stay here. But I haven't had one bad service yet which is pretty amazing. But I probably jinxed myself and will receive terrible service today as punishment.

The seaweed wasn't bad at all in St. Thomas or St. John when we were there in May, thankfully. The one beach we were staying at had some all the way on the other side of the beach, but we never went over that way anyways. And then where the pool was, that overlooked the ocean, there was seaweed there too but it wasn't a swimming beach anyways. Other than that though we didn't see any. I think we lucked out a bit too though because my wife saw some pics recently of Coki Beach and said it had some seaweed there.

I've been down to the Keys when it's been bad. Like really bad. Like a 10 foot wide patch you'd have to go through just to get into the ocean, and that stuff stinks.

Jamaica is the only place I've been to where the majority of people/residence find it to be a necessity to not only have barbed wire all around/on-top of their fencing, but also as a cherry on-top to also smash glass bottles at the top in an effort of further deterring.

That and even upon entry at the airport you are thoroughly warned not to get into fake cabs - and you have to look for a specific license plate for that - there's plenty that look identical.

Also if you ever think you've seen asshole drivers in America in cities like NY, Chicago, etc... lol.... there is sincerely nothing worse I've ever seen in life than in Jamaica.

Also people all over trying to shove pot brownies down your throat, so I guess if you're into trusting random people's drugs and cooking then it can appeal to some.

Yeap. Is it any surprise which city is the worst in Texas? Beautiful city, such a shame of it going to crap. It's already adapting like the other cities are though and simply building out suburbs further and further out.

Still, absolutely nothing compares to LA + SF homeless where you have phone apps developed for people to mark where there is human turds to avoid.
