Dominant Console?

How long before the Gamecube and/or XBox catch up to the PS2? 6 months, a year? Or is the PS2 lead because it came out a year early insurmountable? Does it win by default? Just wanted to get some thoughts on sales of the units and how PS2 lead will factor in. Oh, and I'm referring to number of sales, not which is better (plenty of topics on that).

? Yes, it is. It's been out for over a year. Every console generation though a clear winner comes out, like the original Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and finally PSX. The sales of the winner always are very far ahead of #2. What I'm asking is if you think that because the PS2 is so far ahead having come out a year earlier and having very good sales, that it will be impossible for Gamecube and XBox to catch up in total units sold, and thus make PS2 the winner.

i think the nintendo will still get it's share. it's really xbox vs ps2 in my mind. i think the gamecube goes for a completely different audience. i would never by my kids xbox or ps2 cause of the games for those machines.

conclusion:

gamecube for kids and those w/ kids. (by kids i mean younger than 15)

ps2 and xbox for high school kids and above.

Neither the XBox or GC will overtake the PS2 in userbase, it has far too much
of a lead and is still selling strong in all three major markets (US/Japan/Europe).
It is possible that either the XBox or GC could overtake the PS2 in software
sales a year or two from now in North America, sort of like how the SNES overtook
the Genesis near the end of the 16Bit era.

However, it is incredibly unlikely that anyone will beat Sony in Japan or Europe.
Currently, 2 PS2s are selling for every 1 GC in Japan. Only 262,000 GCs have
sold in Japan in nearly 3 months... it took about a week to sell 700,000 GCs here.

<< 6 months, a year? >>

Sony has already shipped/sold around 20 million PS2s, and both Nintendo
and Microsoft won't even be able to produce that many consoles until they
are well into their second year.

Ask again towards the summer/fall of 2002... by then each respective console will have a number of titles out... it's the games that will sell more consoles down the road...
