Is there an external database that would know that Joe Blow paid for 3 years, etc. or is this all lost if the registrar goes out of business?

I have not heard of this happening too much, but I am very interested to know if you have any insight in the matter.

If they are just a reseller, you can probably log in and administrate at the main registrar's site right? I think a lot of them that shut down are just resellers.

Godaddy.com for example. Has a non-reseller/registrar gods ever gone out of business, and besides NetSol & Tucows, what are some other non-resellers/registrar gods.

There is only few registrar appointed by the corporation that controls the Internet affairs.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

When you buy a Top Level Domain (TLD) name from the reseller make sure that you know who is the actual registrar (e.g. Netsol, enom etc.).

Your Domain name is actually with the registrar, if one of them will go down it will ICAN job to find a solution.

If you buy or rent one of the ?tricky? lower level domains, you might be in the cold if the Reseller closes up.

Here you have an example explaining the Domain Level using TLD .gov.

Domain Levels Explained.

The following is just a speculation.

Form what I can see GoDaddy.com is a reseller.

If it goes down you probably don?t loose your right to the Domain. I don?t know about the rest of the payment. I would assume it depends if the actual registrar was paid.

Go to WhoIs put down your domain name, and look at the bottom.

It should state who the real registrar is:

E.g. ?The registrar of record is eNom. We reserve the right
to modify these terms at any time. By submitting this query, you agree
to abide by these terms."

Not that I know of. They are pretty successful right now as far as I know.
