according to godaddy.com but when I enter the name in IE it comes back "Cannot find Server. The page cannot be displayed", does that mean that someone owns it but just doesn;t have anyhitng hosted?

If so, is there any way to aquire it?

They may not have a website set up but they could be using it for email or something. If you have a legitmate claim and a legal copyright you might be able to get the domain, otherwise forget it.

It's probably not worth going through the trouble of buying from someone.
I'm jsut trying to think of a good domain name but coming up blank.

any suggestions for a personal webs ite name? I don't want to have my real name on it, just want something simple.

thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I just looked up the whois on the site and it says
"Expires......: 2004-11-29 05:22:27"

So if it expires that day will it be available or does it take time to become availabel?

Any other recommnendations on names?

Assuming the domain isn't renewed or pre-ordered it doesn't actually get DELETED (is available for you to register) until at least 45-60 days after the WHOIS expiration date.

I get a free list of expired domains every day from FixOfTheDay.com, look in the "Fix of the Day" forum. Registration is required.

Is it bad to have the hosting company register the domain? I read that somewhere.

Bad? Yes and no, it's usually not a good idea.

Just use a REAL DOMAIN REGISTRAR such as GoDaddy.com or NameCheap.com for under $9/yr.

Also NameCheap.com offers FREE WhoisGuard Protection for the 1st year 😉

What does the whoisguard protect you from? Hijacking? Or just spam?

SPAM

Both godaddy and namecheap allow you to "lock" your domain to prevent hijacking.

If I do register with godaddy or namecheap, how long does it take to go through?

If you register it tonight, get web hosting and change your DNS name servers it could be up and running within 1 hour.

Earlier today beatmix01 registered a domain through GoDaddy.com and it instantly propagated.

Who are you going to use as a web host?
