Domain Name Servers (HTTP)

Domain servers for websites --

How can you make one?? I want to make my own domain name server and would like to know how to do it. I know you need to register somehow with the WHOIS database, but I really am not sure how to figure this one out. Let me know!

Hmm, Well it seems to me that your confusing two different server applications.

For a website, all you need is to register with the whois, or one of the other nameservice resellers. ICANN and the ISP's control the DNS nameservers for the internet. Meaning you cannot create one, unless you become a service provider.

You could however set one up for a local domain on your lan: (which on a small scale, you ** technically**become the service provider) If you want to set up a domain with an intranet and member servers and workstations, you need the local DNS server for your own network. Domain controllers must have DNS running in order for proper authenitcation and other network services.
