Domain name hosts... What's good?

I've been looking for good domain name hosts (just the name is fine, no webspace, etc.). I'm hoping to just get a cheap one or free one, as my current one on NAMEZERO is about to expire. I've seen some "FREE" domain name hosts. Are those reliable (or "secure")? I'm looking for reliability and low cost mainly. I figured you all know best so, any help would be great. Thanks!
