Our Dollar General Store only accepts cash and debit cards, no credit cards.

you don't know anything about sam's club? they obviously do take discover. it's like costco taking amex only.
it was recently they added mastercard usage.

It makes perfect 'cents' for a dollar store. Do you know what typical merchant fees look like for a retail credit card processing contract? A dollar store would be paying you to walk in the door and buy something. The only way the store will be able to handle plastic is with a special arrangement with one of the vendors. Nowadays, the store can't not take plastic because a significant number of people don't use cash anymore.

As stated above I haven't checked their Discover Card policy lately because I do not have a Discover Card to use there. I was a member there through my employer back in the late 90's and remember they used to take Discover Card back then as well as their own credit account(which I had until 2002). I joined again on my own in early 2007 and noticed when they started taking MasterCard, but never paid attention since I rejoined, to whether they still took Discover Card or not.

It's weak but come on, it's a thrift store. Be glad they accept any form of plastic. Also, did you see if they accept debit?

Uh, no it's not.

Fine, let's sit here and argue semantics. You're right, it's not a thrift store in the traditional sense of the word, it's a thrift store in the practical sense in which is that it's a store where people shop seeking bargains. Does that change the point of my post? Nope.
That doesn't even make sense. Of course people go there seeking bargains. Normal people seek bargains no matter where they shop. I guess that makes every store in existence a thrift store according to your nonsensical definition of the word.

Oh come on, don't whine! Dollar Tree took only Discover and debit just a year or so ago. Taking Visa was a new move for them.
Dollar General too, only takes Discover and Visa, IIRC.
Family Dollar takes debit only - no credit cards.
Our local Goodwill stores only take cash and check.
Costco only takes Amex and debit.

I think that's my short list of stores I've encountered that don't take both Visa and MC.

Do I have to spell it out? Dollar Tree sells junk, ok? Be glad they accept anything other than cash.

Why stores don't configure their prices to come out to an even amount after tax baffles me. Nothing kills the mood of a dollar store more is when you go up to the counter with two items and have to pay 2.16.

Same thing with the cafeteria at my school. They'll charge you .95 for something, but tax bumps it to 1.02. It's a stretch that I even carry cash in the first place, much less change. So I always get the evil eye when I get two pennies from the spare change cup. Is it that much of a stretch to charge .92 so that it'll come out to $1 even?

On topic though... (sorta) all my debit cards are mastercard, and all my credit cards are visa. I don't have a clue what advantages one would have over the other, but I use my chase visa the most. *shrug*

Everything in the store is $1.

i bought USB to mini-usb connector, but had no change on me. $1 + tax = $1.05, and i didnt want to carry .95 in change in my pocket, so i charged it. They dont accept Mastercard, but accepts Visa?!

WTF?

Sams Club accepts MC but not visa...
who cares.

I use Mastercard exclusively. My university charges a 5% extra charge for Visa, something about a rate dispute.

And Wal-Mart sells junk, too. I guess we can be glad they accept anything other than cash as well.

Credit card companies or debit cards used as credit charges the company a fee to use them. MasterCard isn't used as credit at dollar tree due to its outlandious fee. It is the only one not accepted we even accept star. Now we do accept it as debit. Sadly we have had customers come in on purpose and get a dozen things and say they only have MC credit (regular customer who is fully aware of the policy) then we have to have a 5 to 10min till the manager completes post void. Since then it has become dollar tree policy to ask customers if they will be using MC before ringing items

Gillette Stadium is the same way. I found that out the hard way at the game last thursday and had to use my debit card because it's the only visa I had.

I don't understand why one and not the other. They're basically owned by the same people, aren't they?

Nope, not even close.

Visa and MasterCard are two separate entities. Their business model maybe similar but they are totally different.

VS = http://corporate.visa.com/about-visa/index.shtml

MC = http://www.mastercard.com/us/company/en/index.html

I think you are confused about the same banks that isssue both VS and MC. Yes, there are banks that have both VS and MC but they pay VS and MC a percentage or fee to issue the CC with their logos. Those banks and financial institutions don't own VS or MC.
