Does it have a Dolby Digital decoder? It would seem like it has to, but then again it lacks a center channel, so who knows. Maybe it is some ghetto Dolby Digital simulation, since it isn't true 5.1 channel.

these are sweet speakers, and that's a hot price, but the subwoofer is HUGE! I think it's 8" offhand.

It is 8" (40 watts to the sub), and these are not 5.1's at all. They are certainly not "ghetto" though. They are digital, and have a decoder built in. These are really nice, and yes they are seriously frikkin loud. I'm listening to mine right now as we type. :)

Oh these really shine in games. QIII will be shaking your room with these for sure. They do not have seperate inputs for front and rear though. I have mine on a AWE 64 Value, and they have really nice surround sound still. The rears can be attached to the top of the fronts and they fire to the sides. It really seems like there is stuff going on behind you in games.

I love em, and think they are easily worth this price.

Oh those may be refurbs though. Mine were, but you'd never know. I paid $115 shipped from compuwiz1 for mine.

I assure you they are refurbs. I know where they come from. They are making nothing on them. :) You will never know they are refurbed, as they will look and sound new.

They may still have some ADA106s left. $83.50 and really sound nice, esp. DVD digital.

Damn! i ordered the Combo from CompuGeeks last week $157. It came with the Vortex2 sound card.. at the time.. the speakers separately where $152 sooo.. i was like.. what a deal! $5 for an A3D2.0 sound card.. oh well.. waiting for mine to come in the mail. I got a question bout the single analog input. Will the rear surround sound speakers sound different using A3D playing Halflife or QIII? or will they sound the same as the front main speakers? If so.. then i need a nother set of speakers on the Line2 OUT on my sound card to get the true '3d positional' effect?

ALSO: the digital output (SP/DIF).. does that really make a difference on sound quality when playing games?

Thanks!

How do these things compare to the Klipsch Promedia's? Would an untrained ear like mine be able to tell the difference??

Eh? It shows $152 at Compugeeks. Am I missing something?

Anyone know where to find that Egghead free shipping coupon? Fatwallet doesn't have it (though there's a 5% off), and Egghead's shipping charges are outrageous!!! UPS Ground for the Altecs is $35, according to them.

As was touched on earlier, they only have one stereo input from your sound card, so those with a SB Live or other 4 speaker output sound card will not be able to take full advantage of the surround sound. For non AC-3 sounds, the ADA880's simulate a surround sound affect. You will not get true 3D positional surround sound that you would with a 4 speaker system with both front and rear inputs. For DVD's the center channel is merely redirected to the front left and right speakers, and can be adjusted separately from the actual volume. The sound quality is great, and the speakers are really powerful, but the rear speakers are smaller and are rated at less wattage so the surround effect is lost a bit.

If you have a DVD player with AC-3 out, but don't have a front/rear output from your computer, or don't care for positional surround sound in games, then these are a great buy, especially at that price. I originally ordered them with my Dell, but replaced them with the Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Theater 5.1 so I could have positional surround sound as well (and true 5.1 surround sound).
