Using my IPAQ 3850....through IR to my Nokia 8290 which is acting as the modem. I am sitting in my car at Gettysburg College in PA waiting for my wife......she's taking a teachers cert. test. Just thought it was cool I could do this.

yup! still here. the anandtech forums load at a reasonable speed for being dialed in at 9600bps.....everything else is slow though.
wife should be done by 10am EST but she has to take another at 2pm.

anyone in here go to Gettysburg College?

Sweet... Ive tried to get my 8290 to work as a modem for my Palm but i must have some settings wrong, cause ive never gotten it to work...

boring! anyone else ever do something like this?

Yeah, a few years ago I did something similar. My laptop modem was cellular compatible. Hooked it up to my nokia phone (forget the model). The highest I could connect was 9600, which was more than fine for checking email and icq'ing friends while driving on the freeway. 🙂 My friends and I would always do it for long road trips. Also, my panasonic cd player had an auxillary-in jack so we would be listening to mp3's through winamp. The only thing we were missing was a DVD player. 🙂

Isn't that expensive? Especially on the road. Very cool but I would think expensive unless it's local free weekend calls...

Hey, I have an 8290 and a PocketPC, how do you go about setting this up? I'd love to try it. Any links to tutorials?

i got it working with my palm too, but it wasn't as easy as it was with th pocket PC. btw....i am running version 2002 of Windows CE.

trmiv: in 2002, i went to settings; connections made a new connection using "generic IrDa modem"....then enabled IR on the phone. I think Voicestream (or whoever your GSM provider is) must enable data calls from your phone. I am IT for a company called PCS One and I fortunately get the service for free.

About the 8260, call AT&T ans ask if their network supports data calls. Voicestream is upgrading PCS One's to GPRS which will allow true 56k wireless data calls.....I can't wait!
