Doing Vegas on the cheap? (flight, hotel, etc)

This is another tip from me inregards to shows.

There really aren't any bad seats for any of the shows. It is wholly unnecessary to buy the high priced seats, more so for Cirque shows, because in Cirque shows the closer you are the more you miss.

I didn't spend a dime on our tickets. They were given to us by a vendor, but good point.

I lived in vegas for the past 10 years and cant really add much here...when my cheap buddies come in from LA they stay at the rio, its much cheaper than staying on the strip and there is a shuttle that will take you over there (its less than a mile away and you can walk if you want).

Not to be a party pooper but its unfortunate to be on a tight budget because we have some of the best restaurants in the world here. If you can squeeze it into the budget, I'd recommend lunch at bobby flay's Mesa Grill. Not too expensive and one of the most delicious lunches imaginable. And thats just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to delicious food in vegas.

i stayed at the rio 2 years ago and if you want to get to the strip often, i don't recommend it. sure there is a free shuttle, but it comes on a schedule so you have to wait a bit for it, and it makes other stops. we ended up taxi'ing after using the shuttle a couple times. and on the weekend, the taxi line can be long as shit (like wait over 30 minutes) and you are out in the heat dressed nice, so it sucks.

Can you provide us with a list of the best?!! Had Bobby Flay's at Atlantis, it was very good

i ate at Mesa when i was at the atlantis 2 decembers ago and that was an amazing experience. was REALLY REALLY good. hell all of the restaurants i ate at at the atlantis were amazing. casa de angelos was also great.

Curious. Which Hilton? Grand Vacations? LVH (no longer a Hilton)? Tropicana (now a doubletree)?

That's a good point. Maybe do a quick consult with a travel agent. They have access to package deals that include flights.

I don't know and can't get ahold of her right now. She said her friend got the deal through travelocity as a package deal but don't know which hilton other than "the hilton" is what she said when I spoke with her this weekend.

I was in vegas last week with my wife, she and her friend are going next week.

its hard to say the best restaurants...there are a ton of michelin restaurants there...i dont know of a place with more to be honest. If you look at the list of michelin restaurants, over my time here I've been to quite a few of them. A lot of the time, I did them during restaurant week, when the prices were more reasonable.

I'd say mesa grill is my favorite place...its extremely good food without too much of the super-upscale attitude. I also had an amazing meal that I'll never forget at L'Atelier, sitting right at the bar which overlooks the kitchen in front of you.
I ate at Wing Lei once, which is the most insanely expensive chinese food I have ever seen. It was very good but the bill ended up being 200 bucks per person (I didn't end up paying though, luckily). The duck was phenomenal.
Craftsteak is great...and also very expensive.

If you're looking for cheap eats while you're on the strip, I recommend Earl of Sandwich. They have some great drunk food there...perfect for the drunk guy just wandering along the strip with buddies.

edit: oops, almost forgot thomas keller's bouchon. best roasted chicken you'll ever eat, guaranteed. that one's no secret though.

Of course he will. He wants to collect an extra $20 on a $20 cab ride. I could be mistaken but I remember reading that this tactic is known by DOT and is considered a violation.
im sure the locals that actually need to use the highway are non-plussed with the tactic.

as a larger complaint, i understand why major interstates intersect many major metropolitan areas, but it doesnt make sense to stuff local commuter traffic onto roads also carrying heavy volumes of long distance traffic.

the whole strip is pretty much safe, except for the occasional bum or drug dealer trying to sell you drugs on the little people bridges. but if you go literally one block off the strip, in almost any direction, it starts getting to some pretty nasty areas. and most of north las vegas is a craphole, but there should be no reason to go there.

You can walk.
You can take a taxi.
You can rent a car.
You can get an all day bus pass.

The only thing free is walking.

These are some great ideas.

I initially went to travelocity to see what rates are. $1800 for flights and a 3 night stay was a bit much.

I'm going to be running this by my wife.

If I can get to Vegas for under $1200, I'd probably do it. I'd want to live for 3 days on $300 for entertainment. Maybe another $150 tops for food. I'd do a nicer meal for dinners but my wife and I are not foodies. No interest in getting $100 dinners. A buffett would be fine most nights. We'd splurge one night though.

So food and entertainment is $500 probably. It's getting there and staying there cheaply that is the trick. Under $1000 for both of us would be awesome.

Well, I'll do some good research tonight.

^^

If you have Costco check Costco travel packages.

Also consider sat - mon instead of fri - sun.

yeah that seems like a really tight budget. if it were me i'd save the money and go another time when you can have more saved. $80/day/person for food + entertainment in vegas just does not sound like it would be a fun time.

Your flight is the most expensive but SW was the only airline that was nonstop for me. don't know what it is for Hartford. The SW deals are all one shot hotel and shows depending on the deal you get. The show ticket that are included will be back row just so you know.

Do not buy any show tickets in advance. Get all your tickets from Tix4tonight. There will be booths all a long the strip and I think they open at 9:00am You can also buy Restaurants and Buffets too. My favorite show was V the Variety Show at the Planet Hollywood Casino it included a meal. I did order this online not at tix4tonight.

Never use a taxi it is a rippoff get the $10 hotel shuttle if you can.

Food is annoyingly expensive. Old fart I use to work with back in the 90s used to brag about all the free buffet food he got with his package that shit is long gone.

If you go mid week, depending on the month, you should be able to get a room(at places like NYNY, Monte Carlo) for around $200-250ish TOTAL for 3 days if you look/shop around. You can get a room cheaper at Excalibur or the Quad.

What is going to blow your budget is airfare.

$300 for entertainment, would probably only be enough to do two shows, unless you do the Luxor/Excalibur 2 shows for $75/pp deal.

$50/day for food is possible if you eat in fastfood food courts or only eat one meal a day.

Here what is possible, but it depends on when you go.

Fly out on June 4, fly back on June 7
Airfare ~$360 per person($720), since you are staying for only 3 days, only take a carryon per person to avoid baggage fees.
Hotel ~$250 TOTAL for 3 nights at NYNY
Carrot Top + Another show at Luxor/Excalibur ~$180($75 per person plus fees, have to purchase in person)
Cirque Show (Love, Mystere, KA, Zumanity, anything but O) using discounts through Cirque Du Soleil $120($55/pp + fees)
Food = $230, eat two (big) meals a day, and it can be stretched.

Total = $1500.

That doesn't include incidentals like transportation to and from airport. Nor does it include drinks. If you want to drink and arent gambling, best bet is to go to the Walgreens or CVS on the strip and buy liqour there. Same goes for soft drinks or water to drink during the day. It sucks, but the best bet on a tight budget is to walk or buy the 3 day bus passes at $20/pp.

Stay at the Flamingo on the strip -

aside from that I have no other recommendations as I do not see how $1200 is possible.

Is the Cosmo still good? Using Betterbidding.com and Hotwire, I found a hotel in the South Strip for $57/night and they think it's the Cosmo.

btw, I went to the Hilton... and did the $20 trick... it did work! I got updated to a suite... was awesome. Try that!
