Hey guys I just got done hanging all the (what a PITA) CROWN and doing BASE BOARD(still needs paint):(

Any ideas what I chould do around this fireplace??? Text Looks so plain and I can't think of anything. Maybe a hearth? Mantle? Tile? Wood?

Need some suggestions.

What's below the fireplace? Is their a little step up to the fire place, or just carpet.

Nice work on the mouldings. The hard part about the fireplace is it's floating up there in the wall... weird. Maybe build a full hearth?

Hmm, it starts about a foot above the floor. You may just want to keep it simple looking by adding just a simple shelf/mantle above it. I don't think you could add anything to the sides that wouldn't be gaudy looking.

Hey thanks. It was a real pain those compound cuts I got a brand new saw just to do them. If I remember right at a 90 degree corner the cuts had to be 33.xx and 31.xx respectivly. Weird huh. :p anyway every single corner was not 90!!:disgust: Some were 92 and some were 87 and all in between.

I found this guide most helpful:

Man, I have a great idea on how to make that mantle look pimpin'.

Here's what I did for a client who had a very similar scenario as yours - plain drywall on the upper area. Some moldings and a few coats of paint later, here's what it looks like:

Yup. The horizontal piece about 6" below the crown is just a piece of wainscot (panel molding) as are the 3 panels. I should get a picture of the mantle now that the client has finished decorating. They have installed a nice oval medallion in the middle of the center panel - looks

I've pretty much made bank working for that client. Did lots of work in the house with building columns, closets, etc. in addition to painting. Last week the approached me on installing new windows for them. I think I need to pass on that offer though - I'd hate to fall off a ladder. ;)

Nice job on the molding, and the colors of light yellow and white trim are among my favorite combos.

Tiles2Tech's on the right track with the white painted woodwork. Perhaps you could incorporate some of your left over crown mold under the mantel, and add some fluted trim on the sides, with a little dental molding for good measure.
  1. Example

  3. Example (natural finish, which would be painted white)
  4. Example (no dental molding)
  5. Example (no dental molding)
  6. Example (mantels alone)

I would stick with wood finish for your fireplace because you have nice wood cabinet next to it. However, a nice stone finish tiles would look good there as well.
