Doh! My dad's making me wear a helmet going skiing this year!

Ok, so it's a family tradition of ours to go skiing every year in Colorado. Last year we didn't get to go because of my brother's college visits. So I was all excited when we got the reservations booked for this year. But tonight my dad tells me that he's making both me (15) and my brother (19!?) wear ski helmets. I know it's probably out of love, but it really "cramps my style". In seven years of skiing and countless tree trails I have only hurt myself once. And that was just smacking into a tree at low speed and knocking the wind out of myself (nothing broken). I know I should probably just be thankful that I get to go, but I just don't get it. As far as body mass and ability I'm much safer than when we went before, but then we didn't have to wear helmets.

Oh well, while I'm at complaining can anyone suggest a good helmet? I'm looking at Boeri right now. Who else makes good ones?

Thanks,
Swan

It's not too uncommon to see total newbies where helmets. But if you've been before and are even semi experienced, it is EXTREMELY lame.

Just you and your brother break off from your dad, go down a different run or something and take the helmets off, he can't make you wear them, especially you're 19 year old brother, that's just wrong.

tell that i love you dad of yours to take that helmet and cram it. then tell him you don't love him anymore because you rather go ski at Lake Tahoe.

don't be square. people will laugh at you.

Helmets suck... In 10 years of riding my bike "hard-core, yo" from 5-15, I fell numerous times. Though I road many dirt trails and did countless jumps, I NEVER even came close to bumping my head. Then, when I turned 16, a helmet law was passed for everyone under 16... all of a sudden, all the young neighborhood kids that I used to see riding their bikes either quit, road scooters, or sheepishly road their bikes with the stupid crappy helmets falling clumsily around their heads. THE HELMET LAW IS SUCH AN INFRINGEMENT OF RIGHTS!! Sometimes helmets AREN'T safer.. my younger brothers friend broke his wrist when his loose helmet (cause' he couldn't find an inexpensive one that was small enough) fell over his eyes and he ran into a gutter.

Tell your dad you're not gonna wear a helmet if you don't want to.. It's your head. I HATE helmets - unless I was riding a motorcycle... but even then, it shouldn't be a damn law.

:Q

I've never really thought about wearing a helmet while skiing. Must be because I don't ski. 😀 It seems silly when you first think about it... but maybe you should think about it some more.

I bet you will find out that you look more silly not wearing a helmet than you do with one. It's not stupid, it's smart.

Helmets are definitely needed when skiing or snowboarding. Last year two people died from head injuries at the mountain where I worked. One was a man who tried to avoid a fallen snowboarder. He went off the edge of the trail and into the trees really hard. A helmet may have helped, but he had numerous torso related injuries as well. By the way, he was the ski coach for one of the schools so he had plenty of experience up there. The other was a little girl that fell and hit her head while skiing. She went into a coma shortly after we loaded her into the helicopter. A helmet may not seem cool, but frankly people that don't use them are simply idiots. a helmet is a small price to pay for the potential safety benefits. Have a good time in Colorado, and ski safe.

I've begun to try this tree skiing business and I don't know how people do it. Often, there is not enough width between the trees to turn the ski parallel to the fall angle, so basically its all tree dodging at a furious pace. I'm considering getting a helmet and cup as I have crunched the family jewels on a low stump. And after some "off-trail" excursions (in which my skis are somewhat damaged..and lift ticket nearly pulled) I prefer nice, safe groomed trails.

I personally trust in salomon products, though for helmet purchases, I hear that trying them on in the store is the only way to go.

it is just lame that your dad is making you wearing helmet. WHERE WAS HE before when you were sking without a helmet? it's too late now to show his 'love' when he negelacted you in the past.

viper: i like to be extreme when it comes to skiing... diamond peaks at tahoe is nice... mostly black diamonds, hence
oh you mean calling his dad a i love you... i forgot to put a 😀

11 people have died from head injuries in skiing or snowboarding accidents this year in Colorado.

It's too bad your dad wants to keep you alive, you're obviously far too stupid to reproduce. Don't wear the helmet, it will be the epitome of natural selection. :disgust:

dude, that's just TOO small of a number compare to TOTAL number of people who skis in Colorado....
you're more likely to die in a traffic accident (and we don't make people in the car wear helmets).

his dad should harness this opp. and purchase a large sum of insurance just in case he dies..that's better than a lame helmet.

It may be a relatively small number, but being #12 would suck. Especially if something as simple as looking a little dumb on the slopes could have saved you.

I bet you say the same thing about bike helmets, right? Well my $60 Gyro helmet saved my brother's ass when he got forced off the road by a vehicle. He landed head first & was knocked unconscious briefly. Cracked the helmet, saved his skull.

I'm not arguing against them. I just don't want to wear one🙂

Oh well, I suppose in a few years it will become like bike helmets where most serious people have one. I might as well start early and make my dad pay the money for it😉

viper you just proved my point.... traffic accident happens more often...so it is a good thing your brother have a helmet.

the way i see it is if he is a good skier, he shouldn't need a helmet which may interfere with his ability. if he's a good defensive skier he shouldn't have any problem.

hmmmm although when i was at Kirkwood, a boy died from slaming into a tree...i should up my insurance too...

You can never be too safe. And the helmet is never going to impair you if you get the right one. It's not the helmets fault that kid died if it fell down infront of his face. He should have got one that fit.

I ride motorized scooters. I've never wore a helmet in the passed while riding them, but I'm going to start now. I had an accident a while ago and hit my head on a wood fence. Luckily I was only going like 8mph, in bark dust. I hate to think of what would happen if I was going ~25 and biffed it on the road. :Q

Better get me some leathers.... 😀

Well won't that be cute then. Make sure they are all matching ones. 🙂

You know, actually, if you get the right kind of helmet, people might think you are a serious kick-ass skier instead of just a dork.

<< Anybody that argues against wearing a helmet; Please, don't wear one. 😀 >>

i'm against wearing helmet when skiing. it's easier to pick up snowbunnies (dem calif. chicks wear bikinis when skiing... )

i'm for wearing helmet on my harley and honda bikes.

i'm for wearing 'lubber' when you have sex freely.

i'm for not wearing a shower cap after i dye my hair

so as you can see, i'll live long.😀

dbzwukan, how many hours does it take you to get down those black diamonds, hence? Anybody who claims to be an extreme skier and argues against helmets is not capable of extreme skiing. Those who are know the value of a good brain bucket.

My first Uvex helmet (circa 1980) was heavy, didn't breathe, and you couldn't hear a thing. My new Boeri is light and comfortable and it's easy to forget that I'm wearing it.

Don't we make them wear seat-belts though? 😕
