Man, I got my first speeding ticket goin from Austin to Houston. I was clocked doin 90 in a 70...oh well, i'm not complaining, I was speeding and I deserved it. Maybe I will start driving more defensively now...maybe. :)

oh yeah, i was just wonderin if anyone knows how cops clock you when they are going the opposite direction? b/c the cop was goin the other way, and i saw him and later (about a mile later) i see him comin up from the back, he made a U-turn and chased me down. Can they clock you while they go the other direction? Could I contest this ticket?

Houston is underwater anyway - what's the rush?

No but in all seriousness - the radar gun works when standing still or while in motion - they could have clocked you and then hit the hand brake and whipped across the median to go get you

most new radar detactors can speed motion you, which is can tell teh speed of the patrol unit and measures the distance it takes to close and give a clock speed.

and you can contest. reguire maitnence logs of the radar detector. and also even if you dont win they usually lower the price some

I have yet to get a speeding ticket. My sister, on the other hand, has one more ticket to go before she gets her license suspended for 30 days :/

You can contest any speeding ticket, or any ticket for that matter. If you admit you were speeding but say something like it wasn't that much over. Maybe 5mph over you might get a lighter fine. Hehehe, I've got a lead foot and I usually am able to get it reduced somewhat. Just be nice and remorseful (if yo uhave the time to go to court that is).

Not accurately, speed is relative. He'd have to figure out how fast both of you were approaching each other, and then mentally subtract out his speed. It wouldn't be accurate. What's more likely is that he just eyeballed you going kind of fast, made a U and then paced you.

If you get a speeding ticket, always contest it by pleading not guilty...even if you are totally guilty. Oftentimes, the prosecutor or magistrate will offer you a plea bargain before your case begins, and it is always more favorable than the original ticket. I got a 77 in a 55 ticket reduced to a 60 in a 55. 4 points/$97 became 0 points/$65. They got their money, which is all this seems to be about.

If you like speeding, like I do, and you're ready to pay the fines, like I am, then keep on truckin'.

A good buddy and I always go racing on the highways when we go out Friday nights. Even if we're only doing a hundski in a fifty-five, it's still a rush.

Just watch out for cockblockers (guys who try to get you to rear-end them). The rear-end laws in my state place the blame on the rear-ender, so make sure you got some tight brakes if someone ever slams them in front of you.

G'luck with contesting your ticket.

Is it? How does the radar gun compensate for the movement of the patrol car then?

None of those links explains how it works though, how does the radar gun establish a frame of reference? You can't use the patrol car when it's moving. Does it hook into the patrol cars speedometer or something?

I got caught by a state trooper doing 98 MPH in a 65 going from Houston to Austin this past Spring Break. Needless to say I did a little research and here's some advice I can give you.

Honestly if I were you I would just plea no conetest and take defensive driving. It won't cost you that much and it's less of a hassle than anything else. Plus, you'll get a discount on your insurance. :)

You can always contest a ticket, but unless you want to respresent yourself in court you'll have to get lawyer which can get expensive and plus you don't seem to have much of a case anyway. Of course you could always contest it and hope that the cop doesn't show up in court. The majority of the people I've talked to who have contested say the cop didn't show up, but I personally wouldn't take that chance. And if was a state trooper and not a regular officer then don't even think about contesting that thing - they'll get your ass.

You can always call the precinct and ask when was the last time that the radar for the officer that stopped you was calibrated. All radars have to be calibrated on a regular basis to maintain accuracy. If the last time was longer than that then you might have a case.

Even if the officer didn't actually gun you with his radar, all cops are trained to estimate your speed within 3 MPH. Since it's actually part of their training I would say that it holds a lot of weight.

Finally, next time you get stopped just tell him that you have a major case of the sh!ts and you were desperately trying to find an exit so you can get to a restroom.

LOL, that's not reassuring that cops are handing out tickets on the basis of a technology that can't be readily explained. Makes me wonder if you guys have something to hide :p

moving radar quick explanation

"by sending one beam at an angle sideways at objects on the side of the road to calculate the patrol cars speed"

So how does the radar know it hasn't accidentally picked another car to the side of the patrol car as the frame of reference? That sort of situation would certainly produce inaccurate results.
