Cars in BMW's new line, the BMW 7 Series, are equipped with a special kind
of Windows: the Microsoft kind.

Microsoft's Windows CE software will allow BMW drivers to navigate, make
calls and control many of the cars' other features. The BMW 7 Series was
launched in Germany last fall and has just been released in the United
States.

The new line of BMWs use a navigating system from Siemens, called the
Siemens VDO Automotive AG, which includes Microsoft's operating system.
Microsoft also recently announced the launch of Windows CE for Automotive
v3.5, the newest version of its software for cars based on Windows CE.

Microsoft said last July, that over the next year and a half, nine automakers
would ship cars with built-in devices that use the Windows CE operating
system, which allows drivers to check their calendars or stock portfolios and
use voice commands.

Microsoft has been working with consulting company Accenture to provide
what it calls "telematic" services for cars, a combination of telecom and data
technology.

WTH is wrong with that?

In case you didn't know, CE runs gas pumps, bank teller machines, cash registers, home appliances, and just about anything else you can think of.

So I don't see what the "DOH" is for.

CE is in a lot more places than you think. There have been several independent studies (I believe there is an article on one in Dr. Dobb's Journal a few months back) that qualify CE as a solid real-time embedded OS.

Exactly.

CE rocks.

I can just see it.

"Your steering wheel has moved. Please restart your car for the changes to take effect."

j/k CE is all good.

where is teh issue?

windows ce makes a great integreted os... ala Pocket PC 2002, Dreamcasts, ATM Machines, Ticketing machines, etc....

what was the doh about?

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "to crash a car" 😉

Wonder if you'll have to hold down clutch + horn + defrost to reboot ...

<< Oh BTW in the pic above, the one with it crashing when installing windows98... look behind the error message. >>

That's all very funny, but what do any of those have to do with the topic of the thread, Windows CE? None of those are Windows CE.

Well the first one was a bank teller. I thought it was pretty funny. The rest I added because the site I found the first on had a bunch of other pics.
As for windows CE, if that's not windows CE then I was mistaken. All I see is a windows error message on a bank teller. If winCE error messages don't look like the messages on every other version of windows then I was mistaken.

Windows CE looks NOTHING like any of the desktop versions of Windows so keep looking😀

Actually, early versions looked a lot like Windows 95, complete with a start button. There were visual differences in message boxes, and window borders, and the buttons in the upper right of windows, which make me say that screenshot is not CE. The new versions, as you know, since PocketPC, don't look much like desktop Windows at all.

Ok, that sounds like a challenge 😀

What does a wince crash screen look like anyways?
