Dogs wearing boots

Mushers place boots on sled dogs to prevent ice crystals from cutting the dogs' paw pads. Urban search and rescue dogs are outfitted with boots to prevent damage from broken glass and other sharp objects.

Prevents frostbite and protects their paws from road salt. That said, my dog never wore booties but we did have to dry him off after taking him for a walk.

yup. Also, in cities that get annual snow, the boots protect the paws from all the salt, which can be quite painful for the mutts.

Short answer is that you wouldn't do what they do in that video...

Longer answer is that, when needed, the Army will issue foot protection for dogs ... (Rocky ground, broken glass, et al.)

While our Sentry Dogs were never issued boots, my dog did once cut a pad. He was taken off duty. Can't work a dog with a bleeding paw.

Me, I wasn't taken off duty. Each night, I got to go to the perimeter with a 16 and a 45. Without the dog, we just called it walking a 16.
