..I have 2 chihuahuas that are about 5 lb. little over. About 6-7 lbs. Great little dogs. Mine are crate trained and use a cat litter box. Not yappy but let me know if someone's around or out of place. I went with small dogs because in todays litigious society large dogs are a litigation hazard to the point some insurance co. are charging more for homeowner ins.and limiting coverage if you own large dogs.

Annoying when alive, although they can be good eating.
 
It is only acceptable to own one if you are a:

1. Rich female socialite.
2. Gay fashion designer.
3. French.

BTW, he was $100 and a pound puppy, got him from the local animal shelter. I've always had big dogs, but like the Min Pins. I'd never have spent $500 + for one though.

He's the coolest dog ever.

Has a big dog bark and personality. None of the "yappy little b1tch dog" qualities. He's gotten me 6 phone numbers and three dates so far too boot.

 
The ones with "big dog personality" are worse then the "scared rat personality". The ones that like to think they are a real dog charge my real dogs all the time and one of these days are going to get eaten. I hate the people that let their little rat dogs run around lose cause "they are too small to hurt anybody" but expect the rest of us to somehow stop our real dogs from eating the rat dogs when we are taking them for a walk and the rat dog thinks its a bad ass.
 
We have 2. One is a long-haird chihuahua cross (we think) and weighs about 10 lbs, the other is a toy chihuahua crossed with a yorkshire terrier, and should max at about 5 lbs. Both are good watchdogs, (no, not gonna tear an intruder up, but make lots of noise.) and are good companions for my wife when I'm not home.
A friend who raises Akitas says these little dogs can kill one of his Akitas pretty easily...they get stuck in their throats...😉
Big dogs are OK if you have the room for them to run...but a small yard is no place for an 80 lb Rott, PLUS, many homeowners insurance companies charge a HUGE premium when you have bigger dogs, as they are more likely to actually hurt someone if they bite them. Our little dogs, (one rat-dog, one mouse-dog) think they're ferocious, but are not likely to do much damage if they actually bit someone...
BTW, the only time our dogs are out of the fenced backyard, is if they're on a leash...they do NOT run free...
 
I had a chihuahua. He wasn't nearly as tiny as the chihuahuas you see on tv... less bug-eyed. I didn't realize he was a chihuahua when I first got him. He was 7 pounds or so. Not sure if it was just my dog, but he was fiercely loyal and protective. He was mistreated by his previous owners, so that might have had something to do with it.

No, they are all insane. A friend of mine has a pair, and when I first when to his apartment(hadn't seen him in a year) They barked and growled, adn one of them jumped 3 feet in the air and bit me on my ass. He eventually calmed down and I got to hold him, but 90% of the time you could'nt go to his house unless you wanted to hear those yappy dogs bark the entire time. He'd put them into another room and the damn thing would grown and jump at the door. But I guess that's what happens when you get married.

..I found out about the large dog liability issue a few months ago when I renewed my home owner ins. On the top of their high risk list are pitbulls and the agent advised that they may cancel or charge ultra high premiums and greatly limit coverage if a customer ownes a pitbull. The have a list of dogs in their pulldown menu on their sight and about 10 dogs..all large are listed and will cause a liability exception and must be discussed with the agent before coverage can be issued. Checking around (SF) at local dog shelters this insurance requirement has resulted in the dog shelters loaded up with pitbulls because owners can't get homeowner ins. or can't afford the enhanced premiums and limited coverage..

 
They're much easier to digest as long as you do a coarse grind on them. For some reason, the meat grinder attachment on my Kitchenaid mixer can't process them as well as squirrels. Don't know if it has to do with the larger bones or what...
 
They can be great dogs for the right people. They are usually noisy and needy, which tends to bug the crap out of me but doesn't to others.
 
Horribly annoying. I've never met one that I didn't instantly hate. And I consider myself a general dog lover. I just don't view small dogs as dogs. They're annoyance pods.
 
5 lbs. is too small.

Our dog, Bob, is about 9 lbs. He's energetic, fun, loyal, and loud if there's a knock at the door. He's our fourth kid.
