Our dog was raised to be self-conscious, so that whenever it would do something wrong it would feel the same pains of regret that a human being does. When the animal urge to poop had passed, Sparky would find itself terrified that it had defecated in the home his masters so generously provided him. He ate the poop not simply to hide the evidence, but because he knew he deserved it.

Wow, very TFP-esque. 8/10.

Dogs do this because they get a big kick out of licking the face of their masters afterwards. They can't tell their owners they don't want to be on a leash, are pissed that they're supposed to stay off the couch and are really mad they had their damned nuts cut off. They get their revenge by licking the face of the bastards that do all this and more to them after chomping on a hot stinky turd.

Who knows why dogs eat poop. But I can tell you dogs very much prefer bear, moose, deer, and/or cat poop to other dog poop. Haven't seen too many dogs eat another dog's poop, but I've seen dogs eat and roll in other animal's poop, incl. all the aforementioned critters above.
