Word on the street at my office has it that US Forest Service is losing 7000 employees (out of 30000) to a combination of VERA (early retirement) and DRP (Deferred Resignation Program). Large parts of the agency have totally lost their ability to function for the American people.

This is BEFORE anyone is forcibly removed (RIF - Reduction in Force) which we're all expecting to happen by June.

Wildland fire, forest ecology and pathology research, biosecurity, recreation, sustainable equitable and transparent timber sales - all will be severely degraded.

I'm sure this will be spun as "government never worked, see?". 60% of my building is gone by 4/30.

I assume we have some function of the forest service to thank for eradicating the Large Asian Hornet invasion the past few years.
There will be nothing to stop the invasive species next time.

The problem is public perception: so much is done well that people don't notice. But they're going to start noticing as the skeletons of agencies start collapsing in time.

A part of me says "fuck them, they voted for this" - if you keep slapping my hand away when I extend it to help, then it becomes clear that they don't want help.

At the same time, I would still like to see them get the help they need, because doing the right thing still matters to me, even if it doesn't matter to Republicans.
