I find it pretty interesting that there is really a lot on the books that makes animal cruelty a 1st-Degree felony... I applaud such a law but didn't think one would be on the books.

I think 5 years would be ample time for them to realize what cruelty can really mean to another living organism.

Ditto.

These kids had problems.

Problems that I as a fellow human being don't want to be subjected to in the future.

More serial killers did things very similar to this in their youth.

I say throw the book at them. TWICE.

And I hope they get PETA members as cell mates. BIG GAY PETA members named Bubba.

exactly... here is some more from the seattle times:

In his request for $5,000 bail for each defendant, Ashman said Paulson has two previous convictions for burglary and one for forgery. His friend and roommate, Loney, has a previous conviction for child molestation and for carrying a loaded weapon.

This makes me sick...those two do NOT deserve to live another day, and since they will, they should live it in misery and pain any way possible.

Deputy Prosecutor Dennis Ashman said he's received hundreds of letters, calls and e-mails...expressing shock, outrage and anger and asking him to prosecute to the full extent of the law.

Groan...all this over a dead dog? This gets more press than the many murders that happen in our nations cities. How does a dog get more sympathy than a human?

My thoughts exactly. 3 kids blast hell out of a school and it makes the news for 2 days, a dog gets shot with an arrow and every media outlet in the world covers it for a week and a half.
Welcome to the USA I guess.

Because animals are the most basic and innocent creatures out there? We've never proven that dogs can understand death either, so WTF would it not be sad for this to happen? I value my dog's life a lot more than some of the humans I deal with on a daily basis.

Either way, Bdawg is right. Hurting/Killing animals is a warning sign of much more dangerous social or possibly criminal activities. I guess I'm the only one who stops on the interstate to prevent strays from getting hit. I put them in the backseat and then drop them off in lower traffic area.
If you bothered to complete your good deed, you would bring them to an animal shelter. But I guess doing things halfassed is worth some merit. ;)

my understanding is that most animal shelters put most of the animals to sleep...

They do..but key being "put to sleep". They don't tie them to trees and shoot them repeatedly with an arrow.

So it's either get put to sleep, or get hit by a car or shot with arrows.

Man this goes beyond just an animal lover's thing. everyone should feel bad for the dog. its one thing to euthanize them, its another to just torture them to death.

*shrug*, i'd rather let a dog wander around than put him to sleep

I guess. I don't think letting it wander around hungry, cold, homeless and always in harms way, is any more humane than giving it a chance to be adopted from a shelter.

Trust me, unless a dog is tied up it WILL find things to eat, and you know it certainly isn't ever very cold down here. Most of these dogs have to live somewhere.

i just put myself in the dog's shoes, so to speak... i don't have any statistics, but i would guess that the vast majority of dogs are put to sleep and not adopted. so if i was wandering around hungry, cold, homeless, etc... would i want to take my chances doing that or would i rather give myself a pretty strong chance at being put to sleep?

I stuffed firecrackers in a frog when I was little. Hope that doesn't put me in the same boat. Plus we used to shoot at squirrels and things. This guy I know shoots at groundhogs and all kinds of animals that mess with his yard.

Dunno. Is it the fact that they tied it up and reused the same arrow? What if they had just fired a bunch of arrows at it without it being tied up?

Is dog > skunk, groundhog, squirrel, frog?

I mean, I'd never kill a dog, I just want to know where people draw the line and what that line is.

I think the fact that these are 20 year-olds doing immoral things to animals - that is the most worrysome. That's why we don't have sympathy for whatever happens to them. All kids experimented when they were younger... I think 20 is a bit different, don't you ?

Not to speak for everyone, but society has accepted certain animals as domesticated and those are the ones we protect with our sense of morals.

Yea I hear you on that, I just wouldn't want to be the kid that accidently crossed the line when I did something stupid and was looking at 5 years in prison because of it. I doubt I ever would have done anything like this, I'm just thinking about all the stupid things that I did...

Actions like this are alarming because usually animal abusers/killers turn out to be the next Jeffrey Dauhmers and Ted Bundy's!

Anyone who's ever used a real bow knows that an arrow (even a training arrow with no tip) would go right through a dog. Hell, it would go right through a person. If it was a broadhead it would leave a wicked hole on it's way through. In otherwords this was probably just a couple shots, if that - Not some hour long torture session with only a few inches of penetration.

That being said, if they were trying to "put it out of it's misery" there are far better ways than a bow. Most people have never shot one, let alone well enough to reliably dispatch an animal. If it were necessary, a gun would have been a far better choice. Heck, even an axe through the heart would be more efficient.

As others have said, it's pretty sad when a dog gets this much attention but women & children can be abused & nothing gets said or done.
