Dog people: What kind of breed is my dog?

Here's the gist:

Wife and I picked this guy up from the pound, he's awesome:
  • shelter says he's a 9-month old Spaniel mix
  • He is extremely smart and energetic
  • He points
  • He's smaller (22 pounds)
  • He is very well mannered around people
  • The place has a free 14-day vet checkup when we adopted him
  • The vet says that he's 2 years old?!

The gist of it is, we're not exactly sure what kind of mix he is as some of the other information we've received from the shelter is inaccurate as it is - judging by the pictures, we're assuming he's a pointer/russell-terrier mix, but what you you guys think?

My guess, Border/Jack Russell. Or Springer/Jack Russell. My buddy's Springer has the same colors and points as well.

Definitely a mix.

And an adorable little mutt! :)

I can't really tell, I'm not very familiar with those breeds, at least not their puppies.

I reckon he is definitely young, at 2 if he had a large amount of either of the breeds in question I think they would be far more identifiable.
At 9 months, those features aren't terribly obvious in a mix.

My buddy has a pointer (the specific pointer breed I don't know), and I could see a little of him in it.

Well, now since we're thinking about it, we're more curious about it; other than what I've already mentioned, are there any other telltale signs we can look for?

Go borrow some sheep from a neighbour and see if he tries to herd them.

Border collies are great because they're one of the most intelligent dog breeds, but they look so stupid. I love stupid looking dogs.

When he points, if the prey moves, does he continue to point or does he give chase?

This is definitely a good thing to look for, among other personality traits.

Dogs can be unique, but most of their little quirks are all based on the instincts of their breed.

Wiki is a great source for finding the typical personality traits for most breeds.
It's how, besides looks, I really helped pin-point our Lab/Australian Shepherd mix. She's just a riot, and a smart little girl who's almost too smart, but she's also a crazy lover. Forms bonds, plus the general lab characteristic. Has more of a small black lab look, and is nuts like an Aussie.

Those basic personality types aren't always helpful.
My buddy's Pointer completely mauled a squirrel it managed to snag in the yard.

You know, looking at the pic of your dog again, it sort of has the eyes of a German Shorthaired Pointer.

Per the discussion w/ the wife, we think he continues to point; unfortunately they're pretty strict about leash laws around here (we live in a townhouse association) so we don't really let him go w/o one on so we can't be too sure.

No idea, but did you ask what the vet was basing the age on?

Either way, grats on your adoption.:)

I'm going to revise and say GSP/Border Collie mix. He's a little small, but border collies don't get too tall. I haven't seen enough jack russels to really factor that in. Could be a multi-generational mutt.

If he continues to point. it would confirm my guess at Brittany being the other have of the Jack Russel mix. They are no longer considered Spaniels by the AKC though. If that's the case, I think it's a good cross as some of the hyperness of the Jack should be mellowed.

Might be some bluetick hound in there. Agree with everyone else that it looks like some Jack Russel blood too.
