ok, i know he is a puppy but he will NOT calm down when im not in the room with him. he has to sleep in the dog room but he jumps up on the wall constantly and whines. whenever i leave the house he goes crazy and chews things up (even though there are other people there).... i play with him a couple hours a day (fetch and stuff and cuddle 🙂 ) and take him on a walk but it doesnt help.. what can i do to calm him down? 🙁

Nothing, really. Puppies naturally have lots and lots of energy. That's how it is with cats, dogs, people, and ... well, pretty much everything else. The only thing you can really do is give him room to run and play. Do you have any kind of respectably sized back or front yard where he can run? I mean really run?

yes he has lots of room. im thinking its seperation anxiety maybe?

like the other guy asked.. can i give him some of my wellbutrin? :X

Give him wellbutrin for simply being a puppy? Me thinks you are not cut out to be a pet owner.

i love my puppy but my mom doesnt love him being up all nite barking and neither do i when i only get like 4 hours of sleep a nite.

I find it ironically humorous that your dog is an attention whore. I wonder where he got it from. 😛

Nope, no drugs for your pets unless it's a legit health issue that can't be solved by a naturopathic vet. Pets can have something similar to separation anxiety, yes. Especially if you raise them from puppies. I got mine just after she was weened (sp?) from the mother. She's ... 10? 11? She still goes fusking nuts when I leave. But she's always happy to see me when I get home, which makes it all worth it. 🙂 I love my puppydog!

Have you considered letting him sleep in your room? Puppies need a soothing sound and something warm to sleep against (like the mother dog). When I brought mine home, I put one of those old fasioned analog alarm clocks that ticks twice per second and a hot water bottle in her pen, and put her pen in my room. At night, I would fill the hot water bottle with fresh hot water, wind the clock, and put her to bed. She stopped fussing, mostly, once the bottle and clock were introduced. And, when she'd fuss anyway, I'd pick her up for a few minutes and cuddle with her on my bed, maybe playing with her for a few minutes. Sometimes I'd just pet her until she fell asleep and then put her groggy ass back to bed.

It's just one of those things ya gotta deal with. :-\

Separation anxiety possibly, but fairly typical of puppies. Mine never outgrew it so she sleeps with me everynight. You could put down puppy training pads, and she if sleeping with you will work.

You should take it to a animal shrink. Or that lady on the animal channel, she'll tell you what your puppy is trying to tell you.

What kind of dog? Terriers often are anxious dogs, if he is one you might want to start cage training (basically what Nik described). My last dog, a miniature schnauzer, was like this and we did it at our vet's suggestion. She was always a nervous dog, but a more well behaved one after a few months of it 🙂 Vet insisted that it wasn't cruel, though we were a bit wary.

he is a mutt from the pound. he slept with me a couple nites but now he wont even sleep he just wanders around the house and hes not allowed in the house soo... that doesnt work.

Oh, I forgot something very important. If you're going to take my advice on cage training like I described, Take a towel or something and get a little sweaty. Rub the towel against your skin onthe back of your neck, the small of your back, and inside of your thighs. Dogs have an extremely insane sense of smell. Your puppy won't be so upset if he can smell that you're somewhere near -even when you're not. Rub the towel on yourself atleast once a week to keep it smelling like you and don't wash it.

You might think it's gross, but I'm dead serious.

You kick your puppy outside at night? No wonder he's a frickin psycho dog. :frown:

Admit it....you just want to buy that sweaty towel from her. 😉

Er.. I think she means in her room as opposed to the rest of the house...? But anyway, yeah the scent thing is a good idea. (and be sure to let us know how much Nik ends up paying for it 😛)
