Dog owners - what does your pup do while you're at work?

I currently work about 5 minutes away from my house, which make things easy. She (my dog) goes to day care 2x a week (for exercise) and the other days I come home for lunch and take her out. For various reasons I'll be moving soon and my new commute will be about 35 minutes.

I'm considering all my options right now. I can take her to day care some days, but at $23 a day it starts to get pricey for more than 2x/week. I could take her to my parents house during the day, who don't live far from work, but it adds some commute time cause they about 10 mins further than my office. I could hire a walker to take her out during the day for about $10. Or I could leave her with a dog door to the back yard but that's a pretty long time to be alone.

I'm thinking my 'rents place cause at least then I get a friend to commute with 🙂

What do you do?

While I'm yet to catch him in the act, I suspect he does the following:

Mine sleep on my bed all day. But I make sure to walk them a few miles or take them to the dog park every day. If I didn't they would probably cause problems.

I also live about 5 minutes from work. I use to come home at lunch time and take them to the dog park which is next to where I work.

However, lately, I've had a friend bring over her dog to my place. I have a doggie door and fenced in backyard so they play for a hour outside then come in and nap for a hour then go out and play for another hour then nap and repeat.

I have a webcam set-up so we can watch them too...

Haha, lucky! A tired dog is usually a good dog 🙂. Mine, for better or for worse, is about a year old and has more energy than a jack russel (black lab/border collie mix). She can go the whole day at day care running around non-stop, come home and pass out for an hour, and then want to start playing again.

She lays around and/or licks her ass all day.

She's 11 years old and way past the destroy the whole damned house stage.

Right now he just sleeps in his crate all day. I usually come home to let him out at lunch. This summer I am gonna be fencing in the backyard with a 6 foot privacy fence, and also putting in an outdoor dog kennel.

He's a 7 month old german shepherd, so he still sleeps in his crate at night as well. Maybe around the 1 year mark ill consider letting him sleep out of his crate at night. If I left him in the house all day by himself he would chew the entire house apart.

She currently stays inside with my wife during most of the day.

In the past when we both worked she stayed outside in a fenced backyard.

Sleeps and dreams of killing squirrels
Got to catch them first.

Ours veggie until get home. Then they are let out to run in the back. 30 minutes later they are at the door, their tongues hanging out w/ a happy look on their face

Depends on the dog's energy level and boredom outlets. My dog, for instance, very laid back. Of course I can't see what she does all day but when I am home during the day her "routine" apparently consists of laying on the family room couch until about 11AM when she wanders over to the wing back chair in the living room so that she can look out the window and bark at the mailman. Then she goes upstairs and sleeps on my bed until around 4:30-5:00PM (when one of us normally is getting home) and after that she is more active, running around the house, playing with toys, etc.

When she is bored, she only does "bad" things when given opportunity (e.g. leaving a garbage bag or food within her reach).

While I prefer to get someone to take her for a walk every afternoon, she is fine without. She gets a decent walk and fed before we leave in the morning so she's pretty much guaranteed to fall asleep soon after.

I would not attempt this with a high-energy dog or a dog that tends to get destructive when bored.

If I had someone willing to look after her all day, I would probably go with that. My in-laws had actually offered to do this, unfortunately my dog and their dog don't get along.

Currently is sticking her nose under my hands to make it hard for me to type.

I work from home one day a week.
I sometimes take her to work other days (best work perk ever!)
I have housemates that are often home on days where I'm gone and she stays, and they let her out.
On the rare occasion that she's here by herself all day, she does ok just sleeping for 8 hours.

She's a 7 year old female Dane. She's a good dog, doesn't steal food or destroy stuff, although she has a very weird penchant of tearing up the bathroom garbage if she thinks she should have gone to work with me and didn't get to go.

stays in his crate. otherwise he'd destroy something. his latest declared chew toys have been my gloves and hat.

when i'm off, he typically plays for an hour and sleeps the rest of the day.

stays at home with the wifey and goes to the dog park for hours on end

crate when we're both gone.

They have a dog door so they can go in and out but I work midnights and I'm sure they spend most of the time on my couch sleeping. They get an hour + or - walk everyday in the afternoon. Just came back from one.
