EDIT: Well, maybe you live on a farm. If you keep them inside though...

I had posted this to my sister a bit ago as she has 3:

Last I checked you don't have to wipe a cat after it takes a crap or get sprayed on when changing a cats diaper. :p

But you don't have to scoop anything either. Having both, I'd rather wipe my sons ass. Doesn't really matter, both seem to somehow be my responsibility in the house.

Even with those two exchanged... Dogs still never come in on top in my of my categories.

I believe the prevailing wisdom is that the Chinese love cats while the Koreans really go for a nice dog. ;)

As for myself, I love dogs of all sizes and cats. But I'm probably more of a dog person at heart.

Always 100% happy when you walk in the door: Dogs

This is true of my cats as well.

My rough approximation:

Great Dog > Great cat > Most cats > Most dogs > Mediocre dog > mediocre cat

I prefer a random person's cat to a random person's dog. I dislike a large swath of dog breeds and the practice of breeding in general. That said, a great dog is better than a great cat. Also worth noting: a mediocre cat is much more disappointing and sad than a mediocre dog, because even a mediocre dog is kind of fun sometimes.

I'm a cat person but I'm allergic. Don't really care much for dogs, but wife is a dog person so we have a dog.

You have to walk/let out dogs and feed/water them numerous times a day.
Cats can be left alone for 3-4 days, but you have to clean out a litter box.

I vote cats. I like to play with dogs... just not own them.

I like both, I think cats get the slight edge, because when a cat is affectionate you know you've earned something or its hungry.

Cats, i have 2 and they are awesome. One sleeps in the bed with me everyday, but he has abandonment issues as he was a near dead stray when i took him in so he's rather attached to me..

I like them both, but the effort to reward ratio is much better for cats IMO. Don't need to train them or take them for walks, scooping a litter box takes about one minute per day if you have quality clumping litter, other clean up is limited to vacuuming some cat hair. Dogs are great but boy are they needy.

My cat was a stray who was starving out on the street when I found her, and I guess the fact that I saved her from hunger means we've bonded. She follows me all around the house and is extremely affectionate to me, but is much more apathetic to my roommate. The last time I took a trip I think that she was angry at me for leaving and pissed in the basement out side of her littler box, but it's a painted concrete floor so a bit of bleach & water cleaned that up. Otherwise no liter box incidents. Unlike a lot of other cats she also isn't picky about her food. I feed her when I leave for work and when I get back, and she quickly gobbles everything up in a minute or two. The only food problem I have is that if I fed her as much as she wanted I'd quickly have a morbidly obese cat.
