call animal control and have them find it a safe place, someone told me animal control takes really good care of lost pets.

3am country road? Leave it. It'll find its way home. My vehicle isn't made to haul a dog and something tells me a farmer doesn't want a call at 3am just to let him know his dog is roaming around.

This. Now, if it was a turtle...

It's 3:00 AM and you're driving on a country road when you see a dog. You stop and the dog seems friendly. Do you drive away or take the dog and call the owner?

Well, since I've already stopped and the dog is friendly... Check tags. Call phone #. Bitch at them for leaving their dog out. Otherwise, take to local shelter, if possible.

I live out in the country. It depends on where. Near houses? Leave him alone. In the middle of nowhere, no houses for half a mile or more? I'd check for identification/phone number. If it's within 30 miles of home, I might even bring the dog home for the night & attempt to contact the owner first thing in the morning.

3am? Dogs aren't nocturnal and aren't just roaming at 3am, it's lost. Since, I've already stopped and it's friendly. I'll call the owner's if there's identification on the dog. If not, he's come home to my house for the night.

When I lived in CA, I found an abandon'd dog at the beach. Took her home and brought her to local animal shelter to see if she was microchipped. No luck and was told that lots of folks abandon dogs at that beach. Thankfully, the dog was young and was adopted a few days later.

It depends if you live near where you found it otherwise leave it.

Dogs explore if left out so it knows it's way home more then likely.

I'd look for identification on the dog and try to contact the owner, in the absence of this information I would call a non-kill shelter so they can shelter the dog and check it for microchips for identification that I don't have tools to look for.

That is what I would hope someone would do if they found my dog.

Yup I would do the same.

I picked up a dog out of the street at 730am about 2 months ago. Lucky for it, I was on the way to the vet, since I was bringing my dog in to get its teeth cleaned. It was one of those little 5lb dogs and I was wondering why thier was traffic, and then I saw the dog. I pulled up next to it, opened my door, and whistled and it came to me, so I just grabbed it by the scruff and pulled it in the car. I then left it at the vet so they could check for a micro chip, or just call the # on the tags.

When I went back in the afternoon to pick up my dog, I asked about the dog I brought in. Turns out the dog belonged to a lady visiting relatives, and she was staying in a hotel about 5 miles from where I found the dog. It had ran out the door the night before and they had searched all night for it.
