ever seen the movie Signs? JK

Maybe it's a mouse or rat. Dogs will get freaked out by those.

It's a matter of association IMO.

For some reason, your dog has attached a negative experience w/going in the basement.

There are a couple of options

1) Disregard the basement and feed your dog upstairs

2) Try to overcome the negative association by making going into the basement a positive experience

By #2 I mean, lead your dog down and give him treats and lots of praise until he enjoys going down there again.

Personally, I think dogs should be more "part of the family" and fed near where you eat, not separated from the family.

When my sisters dog, chewy, is over he usually lies around; however, he always gets up and acts all gitty and sure enough someone will pull into the drive way 30 seconds later. There is no way of seeing the car pull up but that dog knows it will happen. I'd check for a gas leak or animals down there; dogs get jumpy about things that can't see but hear and a dogs nose is very acute.
I watched a show on Animal Planet that said dogs can hear the engine noises from a mile away. If you live in a secluded area, then the dog will hear your car arrive home before you actually arrive home. If you're in a more populated area where cars go by all the time, maybe it's just a distinct sound its hearing and got used to.

FYI, on the same program, they said dogs' eyes are red when lights are shined at them because they have a special cornea (?) that allows them to see in pitch black. What they actually see is black and white images when it's dark. And they are colorblind.. with the only colors they're able to make out being green and red (as I recall). Very interesting, I thought. We already know of their strong noses...

Getting back to your problem... I think it may be rats or something similar (new friend down there) also.
