Or am I thinking of something else? My friend opened an account there today, and they said checks weren't free? =/

checks are never free. you pay for the checks. you don't pay to have an account with them, no matter what, unlike some other banks.

Checking is free from monthly fees but you still gotta pay for your checks. Also, WM will charge your friend 21 bucks per transaction if he goes over what he has in his checking account.

OOOh, I see.

Their commercials are a bit misleading then. "Free checking that's realy free". =/

I never took that as misleading at all. Most banks charge fees here and there for checking accounts, but Washington Mutual doesn't. I've never heard of a bank that provides free checks (beyond the first batch of checks you get)

A friend of mine recently bought a $20 bank check (MO??) and the fees were $4.00 from Wash. Mutual. two days ago.

The Post office only charges one dollar for MO fees.

Bank checks are different. MO usually have a $500 or something limit, which is very limiting in a lot of ways...not for your run-of-the-mill Ebay stuff though.
