Doesn't nVidia (or anyone else) care about 2D anymore?

My rant is with the drivers, not the hardware itself! The latest dets (as with all past 27.10) have a problem with very slow 2D. The problem is very bad when using 32 bit colour. Graphic web pages scroll sluggishly, minimising/maximising windows is slow. Graphics look like some crummy trident or s3 chipset for cryin' out loud! This is on a Ti 4600 to boot! 27.10 and earlier have blazing fast 2D btw.

Cheers!

sharkeeper seem fine to me,2d is fine,minimising/maximising windows is fast for me even on my GF2 Ti card,I guess this might be one of those cases where different drivers suit different users.

🙂

I know of the issue with reduce 2D performance your speaking of, and it seems to occur on every system I've tested with drivers later then the 27.10's, but from what I've seen it isnt very severe as there are exceedingly few applications that truly stress 2D graphics performance anymore... so the relative performance decrease has gone pretty much completely unnoticed by most people unless you actually run 2D benchmarks to test it.
Certainly on my own system I do not even remotely notice any decreased 2D performance unless I actually run 2D benchmarks, and those will reveal a dramatic performance drop.

The only areas I've yet seen in which it's truly noticeable is when doing some 2D graphics design at 1600x1200, or when driving two monitors from one card in high resolution.

It's a definite isue with nVidia's latest drivers, but I've not seen many instances wherein the reduced operformance is so severe that it's noticeable to the end-user as seems to be the case for you.
For whatever reason the issue seems unusually prevalent on your system..... a hell of a lot more prevalent if it's so poor that you actually find it to be slow merely minimizing windows etc.

Yes I can notice it immediately. I'm running 1280x1024x32.

I use a lot of 2D applications that I can really see the slowdowns and it is quite frustrating to say the least. I hope this new Matrox board that is supposed to come out has killer 2D speed. I'll dump this GF4 in a New York Minute! 🙂

Cheers!

I think I solved mine by disabling the nView in MSCONFIG. Btw, Im on GF4MX440 and lower resolution, 800x600.

800x600? You need a new monitor. 😉
On the plus side, your GF4MX has really good FSAA, I hope you use it! 🙂

I've never had 2D performance problems with any of the 27xx drivers on my GF3 Ti500, even with masses of windows open all using the Luna theme. Everything is snappy and perfectly responsive.

How fast is your processor Sharkeeper?

Athlon XP 2000+ at 2200+

It's definitely slower. Wintune video benchmark at 1280x1024x32 with 27.10 is 296 MP/S. 28.30 is 95 MP/S. Much slower. The easiest way to see this is open a window in fullscreen like MSIE or MS Word. Minimise the program so you see the desktop. Then maximise the window you just minimised. With the 27.10's and before, the window pops up *instantly*. With the 28.30's you can see the window drawing. It's noticeably slower.

It shouldn't be this slow on a P2 300, let alone a XP at 1800 MHz!

Cheers!
