Doesn't it suck that you can't be the best at anything?

If you aren't the best at anything then perhaps you can be the best at not being the best at anything: The Biggest Loser.

It's good to have goals. :p

You can't be the worst either. Someone is always lazier than you, dumber than you, shorter, uglier... etc....

Then it evens out. It's pretty awesome that you can't be the worst at anything.

What really sucks is when you're trying to be just "good" at something but you cannot be... For whatever reason. I wanted to understand Accounting, but I couldn't.. so I failed the class. I wanted to learn how to learn to play guitar, but I didn't learn....

Off course with enough patience and time one can probably learn almost anything, but clearly I didn't have enough.

You could try to be the best at pointlessly obsessing about these things. :p

I mean honestly... Most people will never be the best or even worst of anything. There's always someone taller, bigger, smarter, more talented, more reasonable, etc... This sucks.

Why does is suck so much? Many of the people who are the absolute best strike me as very unhappy. Take Michael Jordan. He always saw people around him ready to take him down. It made him the best, but it also made him endlessly bitter. I'd rather have my relative mediocrity than his fame and ability, if that's the price I'd have to pay.

The absolute best? Doubtful. Can't beat the bell curve.

I think you're misunderstanding.
If you go into details, or into something very specific, eventually, it'll be so specific that it only applies to you or a handful of people.

One of the things my job has me doing is dealing with batch jobs, fixing them when the failures are too complicated for our operators and our 2L team, as well as reviewing code changes, doing some of the code maintenance, emergency code fixes for when a developer is able to sneak in a bug past me, and root cause analysis.

I'm sure that there are MANY better programmers than I, and probably many better Analysts too, however, I am better at fixing these than anybody else, and thus far, I've been able to identify root causes of problems for these specific applications faster than anybody else.

If other people invested time to learn, sure, they could become better than me at it, but as it stands right now, At this one very specific thing, I am "the best."

Just need to find your niche.

This actually drives me crazy musically. I work hard as hell to get something down, then some punk comes along and blows me out of the water. Makes be want to jump off a bridge.

I know this feeling. I also find that when that happens, i just keep on keeping on and sooner or later, I'll do something that blows THEM out of the water. Awesome sweet.

It's not about being the best of all time, or being the best in the whole world. It's about being the best at a specific point in time and compared to those around you. That is achievable to many with some effort.
