I've never really understood it either. Carrying on conversations with people in a car distracts me as well, just like talking on a cell phone. For me at least, holding the cell phone isn't the issue.

I'm guessing they got some input from the firemen/paramedics who have to clean up the mess that cell phone idiots make.

I hate talking on the phone in general...I'm sure as hell not going to answer it while I'm driving unless its someone calling to give me money or sex.

I think a lot of it's prioritization. *People don't have their priorities in the right place. Instead of driving first, then phone, it's reversed. I can handle a quick BS call while driving, but if someone wants me to think, I pull over. I also drive a stick, and anyone who calls me better be ready to be putt off for short periods. I seldom deal with it as I'm not a phone person, and people know that. I use a phone to convey necessary information, and not an amusement device.

*This is a part of a greater problem where people are inconsiderate twats. It seems to have gotten worse over the last bunch of years, and you see it everywhere; grocery store, parking lot, highway, line at the bank... The only thing people are thinking about's themselves, and their own petty wants. They don't take anything else into consideration.

I have noticed that I get more distracted while on the cell phone than with passengers in the car. I attribute it to people in the car knowing when I am making a maneuver that takes some concentration (e.g. merging onto the freeway, making a left onto a busy street) so they know not to expect much in depth conversation at that moment. On the phone, they have no idea what I am doing and I feel the need to keep the conversation going. That's why I very rarely talk on the phone while driving.

Here's a fun fact. MD just passed an anti texting law. You can't text while driving. Great, right? Well, it only covers texting. You can do anything else you want, including read the newspaper, work on your Excel spreadsheet, or play video games o_O

And we vote these stupid fucks into office....

I thought most states already had "driving while distracted" laws or something similar. These anti-texting laws are just to make it seem like those crooks are doing something.

Our lawmakers are so far from reality that they have no clue what's really going on.

Which reminds me; there should be a winter driving test in places that get a decent amount of snow (Ontario, for fucks sake).

Only do the test during winter time. If you'd normally get your license in the summer, too bad, wait a while? :p

Sure it can be solved, ban cell phones.

People don't like the solution.

Banning cell phones would be the samething as banning you from having passengers while driving. There is no point. And there is no point in paying huge fines for talking while driving.

yeah, or radios, or GPS's, or anything else that makes being in a car for long periods of time not suck ass.

you cant legislate people to be smart. you can just fine them for being stupid.

or fine EVERYONE whether they can handle it or not(which is the worst and most used solution)

I said realistically. Banning cellphones is not a proper solution in these times. People rely on them for work. Not to mention all the other things that distract drivers.

Fining people talking on cell phones while driving will not change things especially when you have products like this entering the market:

What I hate is when I'm driving down the freeway, happy as a clam, and ketchup drips onto the map I'm trying to read.

Its completely realistic and possible. Nothing could be easier then throwing the "OFF" switch to every cell tower in the US. It is also 100% fool proof.

It would definitely not be popular, but doable.
