I work for a large company with thousands and thousands of people doing everything from sitting at a desk to operating heavy machinery. In theory they can test all of us, but the only people that ever get tested are the ones doing the heavy machinery type stuff.
The only time I've ever heard of anyone in the office setting getting tested was this one dude who went from being a top employee to missing work all the time and generally being nuts when he was there. Turns out he got hooked on the crack.

Back when I first started here in 1993, I was still a pothead and had a injury at work. The receptionist covered for me buy calling the Urgent Care to set up the worker's comp info and told them a drug test wouldn't be necessary. I wasn't high at the time of the injury but she knew me well enough to know the test would indicate it was in my system from being such a stoner.

so what if you smoke and they test you. are u fired or are u just denied the promotion.

I've never had to pee for a promotion, but I'd still be subject to all the provisions of my union contract, which include all of the above reasons for a "tinkle-test".
While part of me objects to them as an invasion of privacy, and feel that the tests need to be improved, so that they can separate the joint you smoked last weekend from the one you smoked on your way to take the test, :roll: , many jobs SHOULD do testing on a more regular (albeit random) basis. When I work on maritme jobs, I'm subject to the Coast Guard testing standards, which are MUCH more strict than the ones usually given for most jobs. NORMAL urinalysis testing has cut-off limits, below which any residual amount is ignored. Not so with the USCG testing...ANY measurable amount of a tested substance is cause for failure, but does trigger an automatic re-test before any disciplinary action is applied.

Doing some reading on this. Apparently drug-testing is not used to any significant degree anywhere in the world except for the US, except where the job requires certain safety provisions, ie. transportation.
Needless to say my employer does not use drug testing (Canadian).

Meth and Cocaine don't stay in your system that long. Piss testing really only affects normal pot heads and the HEAVIEST of cocaine/meth users, who wouldn't have their sh!t together enough to get a job anyway. You really have to be a dick to want a hospitality job to be drug tested.

Yup. Most drug testing really only tests for pot, which happens to be the LEAST harmful drug. They may or may not test for other substances (costs more).
