All incoming undergraduate students are required to have a laptop computer.

this is what they get

i am wondering what laptop for the class of 2008 this year

Hasn't been decided yet. The manufacturer of the laptop hasn't even been decided yet, as far as I know. The 5-year contract RPI was in with IBM is now over, and they're looking into their options for the upcoming years.

And with RPI, you're just required to have a laptop. You don't have to buy/lease the one they offer. Heck, as a student there I can say that one could probably get away with not owning a laptop computer in many cases. Only exceptions I can think of would be for some of the Comp Sci lab classes, which are primarily done on laptops.

If I need computer access at uni, I'll go into a lab.

There's at least two colleges in the Toronto area who also have this requirement for tech-specific programs of study.

Which colleges?

Gigabit ethernet, 80gb hard drive, but only a 32mb Radeon 9000? That's just crap.

Please don't tell me that make people program on a laptop. Even with the 21 inch monitors my schools Comp Sci lab have their wasn't enough desktop space.

Yes, brother has to pay $3500Cdn for the priviledge to use college laptop, along with licences to use the preloaded software. At the end if he wants to buy the laptop, he has to pay the college another $500 and actually wait another 6mnths after another college student is done with the laptop who happens to lease it after him.

What a rip off.

No. between a few references, the assignment, and at least 2 or 3 instances of emacs takes alot of space.

Ah that explains it. I used vi and 15" was suffice :p

just joking of course.

But in reality people do much more than university work on much less than 21" displays.

that is retarded. My co-worker went to Dental School and they forced him to buy one of their laptop (choose from a list), and the law school here makes you buy a laptop from a list or one comparable and approved before hand by the schools IT guys.

My college (BYU) has a requirement that everyone own a computer, but makes no effort to enforce (BYU doens't enforce all the rules?).

no, though the uni has some deal with dell, so they offer laptops with a small discount.

but yes, overall they're pretty useless. A few friends have laptops, none of them actually need them...

BoyBlunder -

IBMs are business machines. Their top of the line models don't have graphics cards that are anything but mediocre. They aren't dells and aren't meant to be. I bought a T40 last summer that has a radeon 7500 w/ 16 MB and it doesn't really bother me at all.

CMU has no such policy (thank god). I did get a laptop last year, and it's never used in class. I use it for presentations and demos mostly. Using a laptop in class would be so... distracting.

Im in the IT management program at Ryerson university and we are forced to rent Thinkpads for about 1400 per year. They claim its to make sure everyone have the same laptops and software compatibility bla bla bla. Its pure BS, but what can ya do.

good schools will have computer labs. Good CS departments will have their own computer labs just for CS along with all software needed available for free. No computer should be required. The software is also available free to students to install on personal machines. Requiring a laptop is retarded.

No, but when i was at NJIT, every student had to buy a computer. It was actually awesome. Every student had a pretty loaded pc. It was a fairly solid machine. Of course mine was free cuz I was on scolarship, but hey. I actually thought it was a great idea, even though I already had a pc.

The pc that we got was actually built into the tuition, and there was a buyout option after 4 years. It also had every major program for every field of study. Comp sci, engineering, you name it. Thousands and thousands of dollars of software.

I can understand requiring everyone have a computer. What if you already have a laptop or an IBM thinkpad?
