My supermarket fills my Cart, puts it into a truck, then brings it to my door. I order my Groceries Online. They charge $7.95 for the Service though, but it's worth it.

Here while the cashier unloads your cart they scan the item. Then hands it over to a bagger who bags it and loads it back into your cart. It is very efficient, similar to your self checkout+bagger, but someone else is scanning the item for you.
Meanwhile you stand there idle. Idle time = lost efficiency.
That efficiency is made up in the form of an increase in operating costs for the company, and they pass the "savings" on to the customer.

We have a Supermarket over here in Cali called Food4Less and only has cashiers and no baggers.

Back in the late 80s early 90s, many stores adopted new shallow, but larger carts with fold down fronts along with new cashier stations that allowed the cashier to unload your cart as they scanned. It was the new trend for a while. I don't know exactly why, probably a time per customer ratio or worker comp issue with cashiers being forced to lean way over, but they quickly moved away from this, and the carts and stations returned to normal in most stores.

Of course not, only a moron would pay for something like that.

I don't pay for it, infact here the unload everyones carts and bag everyones items. You don't even ask, they just do it. You push your cart to the pay station and the cashier unloads your items and scans it, while someone else starts bagging it. They then places the items back in your cart for you. It is wonderfull. All free of charge. Although this supermarket does charge a little more than others, but the service and selection make it so worth it.

What is so hard to comprehend? some supermarkets do not allow you to take the cart out by yourself and they will not allow a customer to bag (ie Roche Bros.). Yes, some items may cost more at those stores, but you have to pay for service somehow.

That said, libing in Natick, MA, that service comes cheap since Stop and Shop has similair prices to Roche Bros.

Roche Bros saves money by not allowing customers to take the wagons out by themselves, no wagons get damaged or need repairs because of getting hit in the parking lots.

Roche not only unloads your cart at the register, they'll even load your groceries into your car for you, no tipping allowed.

BTW, Roche was much less expensive before they expanded by opening several new stores several years ago. I used to shop there regularly, now Shaw's has much better deals.

ROFLMAO!! Moron.

There is no explicit charge. They don't say $1.00 to unload your cart and bag.

It's called subsidizing.

Hey, I got an idea. I'll sell you my car for $225k, and throw in a free house!

They have grocery stores in Canada named Co-op which do the bagging and carting for you. 'Free of charge'. They do charge more per item over other grocery stores.

Of course I don't shop there because I'm not stupid to pay more:p.

It's like going to a hotel that has doorman opening the doors, wake up service, free internet, etc, but charge you 200$+ for the room. There is no such thing as a free service.
