It IS the motherboard, or some component on it. I've had PCs that do this (or the opposite - make a faint, high-putched noise when the CPU is idle) before.
I can also hear some monitors making a similar high-pitched whining noise. Many people can't hear it. I think the pitch is right around the upper boundary of human hearing, and I have ears more sensitive than most. I hear the same sort of sound out of some PCs.

one bad thing about built in sound cards is the interference and the resulting high piched squeels and such. I have never had this problem with a PCI sound card.

I guess I'll see if opening the case and puilling the plug on the internal speaker works.

I had that problem with a computer once... I solved it by replacing the video card...

No, it is.. there's nothing on the motherboard that makes audible noises like this.. I know what he's talking about, it was a big problem with socket7 systems for some reason.Originally posted by: notfred

I'm betting the sound isn't coming from any speakers. I've tried that before, unplug them and you stil lget the sound, because it's actually coming from something on the motherboard.

the whine from monitors is from the flyback transformer. i can't think of anything similar to that on a mobo. that's pretty damn weird.
