seriously, what does degaussing actually do?

Degaussing removes permanent magnetization by introducing an alternating magnetic field that is stronger than the offending permanent magnetization.
This field will energize the magnetic domains of the material and induce an alternating magnetic field. Then, if the amplitude of the the alternating
magnetic field is gradually reduced to zero, the material will be demagnetized.

EDIT. I haven't seen a CRT without one for 5+ years. In the 80s and early 90s, the monitors i used didn't have them usually though. (monochrome monitors, and 13in or 14in VGA displays)

Degaussing makes a calming noise that gently soothes all the lil' electrons if they've became frightened into place by a big, bad magnet.

Many people don't realize the hard button that used to say deguass is now a soft menu on the CRT setup screens. Some monitors I believe do a degauss on power up, it would make sense and most leave the crt on now which goes into Green mode.

Hmm... what would be the LCD equivalent of degaussing? Massaging dead pixels with pencil erasors?

hmm ALL new ones should have it, but old ones don't. My old 1992 AG doesn't have it. It costed $1700 too!
Whereas my manufactured in august 2003 IBM P275 has it.

lol, thanks for this thread.

I used a crt in summer school today, and purposely degaussed it 5 times, because I missed the cool sound.
