Does your house have a burglar alarm?

I have one, but it doesn't make me feel more secure when I'm not at home.

Why? I just found out that any person that wants to break-in, merely has to cut the phone lines. No connection=no alarm signal.

I was made a aware of this after reading of a warehouse break-in that involved the theft of 11,000 cell phones. The thieves cut the phone lines, and then took their time loading up the phones with a forklift. The authorities did catch up with them in Florida, but they still accomplished the burglary without getting caught in the act.

I think there are radio signal type systems that use cell phone technology, but I don't know much about them.

As far a guns go, they're a great thing when you're home- but what if you are gone?

If anything, he's a little on the pudgy side. A 100lb lab should be on a diet, stat. Can you feel his/her ribs with a gentle push? If not, that dog's overweight.

I have two housedogs who hate everybody except the family. They aren't big enough to do much damage, but they make a helluva racket.

Most home security systems are made to deter casual theft like neighborhood hoodlums looking to score some small items to pawn. Most won't pose a serious challenge for thieves with tools.

That being said, just because the call doesn't get out to the monitoring center doesn't mean that local alarms won't still go off when the door/window gets jimmied/forced/broken. Not that this helps much if you don't have any neighbors within earshot.

Okay, all of you with dogs. What do you do when you're on vacation? Do you let the dog just run the house when you're gone?

No and I don't lock the doors either. What a waste of time. You know it's easier to kick in a door than fiddle with a lock?

Guess I'm too trusting but I only had one theft incident, once in college after hunting I was late to class so took my truck to school and both shotguns were stolen out of it. They broke the window and I had an alarm.

I should say I live behiond a 8ft block wall so it's not like anyone can get in and if they do no one will see or hear them so I' m basically screwed anyway. I have two dogs roaming the yard though.

They have an automatic feeder and automatic water machine. Sold at petsmart and will last about 2 weeks. Mainly they just do what dogs are best at, sleeping.

pft. My dog is 120lb German Sheppard. Ever wanted to not pass out candy on Halloween? Just let my dog sit near the front door. We haven't had visitors for years, she scares em away.

My friends parents dog is HUGE. It is over 200lbs... it bends down to drink water from a sink. I swear that thing is a horse.

Not a solid-core door with a mortised deadbolt if the strike plate is secured with 3" screws. But yeah, most homes don't have that sort of hardware.

Every time I've had something stolen from my car (three times), that's what the thieves have done. It's simply an extremely fast and effective method of gaining entry.

I live on the third floor of a secured apartment building. Someone would need to climb a tree and swing from a rope to break in through my window. If they follow someone in through the front door, they would make a nice racket kicking down my door. Everyone else on my floor would hear it and almost all of them know me, so for my home, a burglar alarm is probably an unnecessary precaution. I'm insured anyway.
