Does your employee pay your cellphone/internet expense?

We rotate the on call status, when it's your turn you get $250 extra per month in pay. We each work a month, then rotate out, so in a full year I'll get an extra $1000 or so in pay. I already had the phone, and realistically we're the 2nd line defense, there's another guy who gets called first, and he ALWAYS answers. The last guy got one call in the month.

I've been refusing my company's offer to pay for my cell phone because then I don't have the option to turn the cell phone off or ignore calls on it whenever I want. A small price to pay for an extra bit of freedom.

My company pays for my AT&T Tilt with full data service (I don't even receive the bill), and I expense my Comcast Cable Internet service. They also supply me with a new vehicle every 3 years, including all maintenance and insurance, and pay for all fuel including personal miles. They also supply me with an awesome set of tools. My job rocks.

At the moment I am living at home. We have a land line and we also have comcast cable.

I don't plan to be living at home forever though... I'm planning for the future.

Eh if you really only need it 1 out of 5 weeks....They are giving you more than enough for the cell phone...Then most of the internet cost considering you deal with your internet costs now or would most likely in the future. I don't see the big deal in covering 100% since you aren't even expected to use it in any given month. aka the are probably paying 90%-95%. Even though they are only asking to be on call 10% of the year.

why don't you already have home internet? If you don't care for it, just get the data plan with the cellphone so you're not tied to home. At any rate, my employer does up to $50 for internet at home... which is fine for me... getting 20/5 FIOS for $5/mo. Which also means the $100/mo. FIOS triple play pkg I'm only paying $50/mo. for. 😀

My current employer pays my cell phone expense...my past employer paid my internet expense. Since the phone my employer gives me is an iPhone...I'm happy to keep the current arrangement as iPhone service cost a bunch more than the $30 a month I pay for internet access.

OK, well you're going to need to look at your home phone service as your own responsibility. It's pretty tough to get by without a phone in this country, and most companies aren't going to pay for your personal phone service.

So you have 3 options -
1. Phone service from the phone company; in which case your company would cover the cost of DSL beyond what the phone costs. Reimbursable cost = $30 DSL + $60 phone
2. Cable modem + VOIP phone; in which case you already have Internet service for personal use. Look at it as your company paying for half of it when your personal usage is really far more than half (and you'd be paying the full cost anyway) Reimbursable cost = $32.50 cable modem + $60 phone
3. Use a personal cell phone as your only phone. Lot of people doing this these days. In this case you shouldn't expect the company to pay for half of your regular bill in addition to any features that they want you to have. Reimbursable cost = $45 DSL (with phone) + $30 cell phone

Your company is being reasonable.

If you're worried about ETFs you could buy a cheap phone off eBay and get cell service without a contract (Verizon offers this, not sure who else does). Or you could use a pay as you go phone. The money they're giving you will cover a pay as you go phone used occasionally one week out of every five. Or you could just eat the ETF when you quit or get laid off.

Your company is being more than reasonable IMHO.


In this market you really should feel lucky to be gainfully employed let alone having your services paid for.


I work in IT and a phone is provided (so that they can contact me 24/7) but internet is not. They might pay for it if I asked, but IMO it would look a little weird. IT staff should have internet at home - I'd be a little leary of an IT person that had no internet access. It's kind of like having a mechanic that only rides a bicycle and needs to hitch a ride to pick up parts.

$90 is far more then reasonable. If you only need the phone for work, get a Prepaid from Virgin mobile or something. If you also didn't have internet before, go with DSL. You might even come out ahead. But of course don't tell them.
