How are you going to calculate all these sin, cos, lg w/o a 'scientific' calclator? Maybe students should be forbidden to use calculators even at statistics classes?

They always let us use tables for those functions so we wouldn't need a calculator.

Exactly.

For most people, after a few years of trig and precalc, you should have the most common values memorized anyway.

I've always been able to, a simple:

Show all work

Will prevent people from benefitting too much from the advanced calcs (TI-92+/89).

We were allowed to use any calculators in Calculus 1-3 and DE. I had the TI-92+ and I wasn't given any grief about it.

Heck when I was at school I also used tables. But later on not. Now I can't even derive simple numbers w/o a calculator.

In the work force, most people have calculators and reference tables readily available.

calculators will hinder you for this. You're supposed to know the trig properties for sin and cos so that you can break and convert them to useable functions. If you use a calculator, all you'll have is a number, which makes some equations infinitely more difficult.

That depends entirely on your calculator.

Tables?

Wow.. my professors talk about those things they way people talk about slide rulers...

I think I have seen a table during my time at college.. in the way back pages of the calc books but that is about it.

Yes, well in high school we were required to have/use calculator. So in college if they don't let met use it i will drop class. Can't do it in the head.

Maybe, but if I type (sin(x))^2 + (cos(x))^2 into my calculator, it returns "1".

If you rely on the calculator you won't know jack, you SHOULD be able to do it in your head. That's the whole point of banning the calculator, it's for your benefit.

You're a fool.
