Does your asian friend know kung-fu?

Seems to me that in almost every movie that has an asian, s/he knows kung-fu. Do you think this reflects real life?

actually i knew a white guy that was taking kung fu classes...and yeah i used to take tae kwon do classes when i was a kid...i would say at least 50% of asian kids in the US have taken some martial arts class

Of course it does. Don't you know anything?

All Italians are members of the Mafia, or know someone who is and they have a cousing Vinny Boombatz Bag o'doughnuts
All Germans have a secret room in their house with a 4-by-5-foot picture of Hitler on the wall and Nazi memorabilia everywhere
All Latinos have criminal records and drive cars with tiny little chain-steering wheels
All Irish are beer-swilling drunks that eat potatoes for breakfast
All Africans actually hunt their own food w/spears
All French drink red wine with breakfast, hate Americans and eat french fries

and

All Oriental know Karate, Kung-Fu, Jujitsu, TaiKwonDo and Judo...even the old ladies will kick your ass into next Tuesday.

😀

I do Wing Chun and have done other forms of MA but stopped as I thought the teachers weren't good.......

I dont know about other ppl...

but I do know that about 50% of Koreans that I know have taken TaeKwonDo. and are at least a Black belt...

my stereo type is being a drunk, the asian stereotype is being able to kick people's asses. i like the asian one better.

i think the bigger stereo type is...
on the whole martial arts.

how martial arts = kung-fu or karate.
you may know taekwondo... or jijitsu... but it all turns out to be karate or kungfu.

it's like saying all asians are either chinese or japanese.

while we are on the topic of stereo types...
i'd like to bring out thoe whole stereo types of asian males.
asian males are known as the wife beaters.
and i for one... hate that notion.

you look at movies with asian actors.
they fall into the categories of either wife-beater, martial arts guy, asian mobfia, or a computer geek.
for asian male kids, there is no asian male heros to look up to.

i just think that this sucks.

bring in some of more realistic asians into tv and movie industry.
'cause we don't all beat our wifes, or can woop 2 dozen guys with bare hands in 30 seconds, or carry guns in trench coats... or know the difference between ide's and scsi's.

ok... maybe AT asians do fall into the last category... but again... that's all AT members... not just asians.

i don't think it matters that much, since the asians i know, all have strong families... so they don't need role models from tv.

In china, Kung-fu is their PE. So, everyone who goes to school knows Kung-fu ... but that doesnt make them as good as in the movie, just enough to know how to kick and self-defense.

Nope, mone of my asian friends know any kind of martial arts. The only one of my friends who know any kind of martial arts, karate to be exact, is arab.

Hmmm...I'd say "that's such a stupid stereotype" but it's so true.

Me, both my roommates, and my Asian friends here at school all came from different parts of the country and had different kinds of parents...but we *all* have at least 2 years of martial arts experience behind us

i went to kung-fu school when i was like 6-7 years old. i was one of the more advanced kids in class... they started to teach me how to use the swords (well... the wooden ones at least... hehe 😛). now... all i remember is the bitch slap and kick in the nads. 😱

If more than 50% of a certain group (read, a majority) does something or has a certain quality, is it still "stupid and ignorant" to have stereotypes?

hehe
just remember this, american asian are more like american in behavior
alot of martial art in asian are strong tie to the language they spoke. so one can't really master the martial arts, when they can't even speak the language. of course that have alot to do with masters that don't speak english, so it's hard to teach when you can't communicate 🙂

My roommate (4 generation American on one side of his family, 3rd on the other) is a blackbelt in a discipline of Taekwondo practiced exclusively in America...all the commands are in English and it encorporates Western-style boxing and stances as well as ground moves.

I heard every boy in Thailand has to learn kickboxing since that is their national pastime. I wouldn't mess with any Thai guy even if he is 5'4" and weighs 120lbs.

How'd we get stuck with a national pasttime like baseball when they get a cool national pasttime like beating the fvck out of people?

I have two asian friends who are martial arts die hards. They're totally into the mixed martial arts UFC type stuff.
