Does XP even work for games?

I bought a copy of Win XP Pro full version. I spent a hell of a lot on an OS that still doesn't work and it has been out for a year. The damn OS keeps crashing sighting driver problems. I've got it set up for NTFS (which may be the problem). I'm running an ASUS 8420 and an Audigy and have the latest drivers on both. About half the time it states that it's the creative driver that's the issue. I mailed both M$ and Creative four days ago and still have not recieved an answer back from them. Anyone have any thoughts on this, or theories to fix the issue?

You can try to get the service pack for XP. It should help, just go to the winupdate thing on the start menu. That should get some fixes for common problems. If that doesnt work, then try reinstalling the drivers again, but remember to uninstall the drivers completely first, then install new ones. (Make sure you do have the newest ones)

We need more info like what video card , drivers and games etc.Btw running WinXP & Audigy at the moment as my main gaming machine, most games work fine,just older games you may have problems with.

Creative's drivers have always been bad IME, most likely it's not XP's fault it's and it's definately not caused by the use of NTFS.

after the service pack & updates off windows update, i haven't had any game-related problems with XP pro. i'm running a variety of games, some really old & some newer. XP has been pretty solid for me overall.

WinXp is terrible. Install DOS 5.0 or OS2 if you want to run games.

Those are okay, but if you really want to do some hardcore gaming you need to be running MacOS 7.04, the best gaming OS ever!

I am not a big time gamer, but I have had a lot of success with Win XP Pro and games, including (just to see if I could get them to work) Duke Nukem, Doom, and Redneck Rampage (all DOS based) and got them all to work flawlessly...

Oh well, just my experience, good luck fixing your issues...

Any OS will crash a lot if you install the wrong drivers. Are you sure you installed the correct drivers for your hardware? Think about that long and hard. The Audigy is very popular card.

Most gamers in these forums use XP, and lot of them also have an Audigy.

etc....

all run without a hitch....

and actually runbetter because after they close my system is jsut as fast as it was before i played teh game unlike 98se =P which was fast but wasnt good for leaving your computer on weeks at a time like i do

I love XP! no other operating system from MS has ever been so stable. I have had both home and pro installed on my home system and both work eaqually well with games. In my opinion Creative's driver support stinks! That is why I do not use a creative sound card any more. Since I went to a Philips sound card I have not had a problem with sound card drivers since. I even have had Origin Privateer II running on XP! Just my opinion.

You should try looking for BIOS updates for your motherboard, as well as driver updates for your soundcard. Also search these and other forums for people with similar problems. Personally I've been running Windows XP Pro without a hitch for weeks on my new system. I play UT2003, Hitman2, Counter-Strike, and if I threw any other game at XP it would run it, too.

Go into your bios and disable anything you are not using like the serial ports. The audigy card takes up a lot of resources. I had to do this when i went from the soundblaster live to the audigy because the audigy uses more resources. Before I did this windows would not even boot citing not less than or equal to errors. Everything and every game works great now!

Win2k is just as/more stable than XP is. Runs almost all of the games the work on XP too

"Order" is an ID I set up because I couldn't get at my password on my PC. Sorry, haven't had time to fix my PC till tonight and it wouldn't boot. OK. The deal is I'm running a AMD 1700 Asus 266A7V, Asus 8420, Audigy, 3com 10/100. Near as I can tell it's the Creative driver that's the issue. I can't use the driver that came with the Audigy or it will crash. This means that I can't use any of the software that came with the Audigy. I load the driver off the Creative site and all is fine. If I then install the update driver the PC won't boot. I can't even get it into recovery mode... It's taken me days to get to this point where I know what the issue is. It's not necessarily MS, it's Creative. The other issue was that I had to throw an extra 256 megs of RAM or it kept crashing... not sure about that part. This sounds like maybe the first 256 megs of RAM is simply unstable.

I think after your last post that it is a memory or VIA chipset problem(if thats whats on your ASUS). THe VIA shipset has been know to cause problems with the Audigy. I have had 2 bad sticks of memory causing numerous sleepless nights troubleshooting.

I've found Windows XP Pro is excellent for games. It even runs Warcraft for hours even though you had to go to pure DOS mode to get it to run properly in Windows 98. The only game I can't play in Blood2: The Chosen.

I just want to thank everyone for their input on this. Since adding the RAM I have not had a problem with Crashing. It is strange though that every crash that I had came up as a driver issue and occasionally actually pinpointed the Creative driver as being the problem. Oh well, I can sleep again knowing that Battlefield 1942 will run just fine under the blue skys of Win XP (had to say something nice about XP after I was trashing it earlier!)
