my parents are getting a new computer, w/ WinME, and it has 128mb of ram. Will another 128mb ram speed it up?

Basically not. I believe it'll improve performance in some areas by about 4%. It isn't a true 32 bit OS so it doesn't take full use of all its RAM. Win 2000 is the only OS that actually likes all the RAM it can get. Then agian, it depends on what your parents will do with the computer. If they are using Photoshop with large pictures etc like myself then another 128MB stick would help. But overall, it wouldn't help greatly. But with RAM prices the way they are, it wouldn't hurt would it?

I think I'm gonna upgrade. The computer comes w/ a free XP Home upgrade coupon, so I'll be upgrading. Since XP is basically a better version of the Win2K kernal, it should do good w/ lots of memory :)

A better version of the Win2k kernel? Thats interesting. Kinda like ME was a better version of 98SE? ROFLMAO. Hey, if you say so. Personally I will stick with a business class OS. Fewer fluff and "go back" "features" that steal performance.

I use winme, originally Ihad 128 and all my mem was taken often
upgraded to 256, good good, it didn't use the swap file at all most times but 160MB of ram was almost always being used, maybe 3~6hrs in to computer usage, at startup only 40~60mb of ram was being used. Then I bought tribes2 and it would read of the HD a lot, I also have a v5. Now I have 512MB of ram and Tribes2 loads much faster. Having a lot of ram helps a lot in win me if you keep your computer on for a long time and will be doing hardcore stuff like gaming or network/graphic stuff. If you're just gonna use it to type papers and check email, 128 will do.

Since when will WinME not take full use of RAM??? Yes W2K is more effiecent and a much better OS overall but the statement above is way off base.

More memory may or may not help it all depends on your software and what you use your computer for. Monitor the swap file under normal useage and see how much swap file it needs. This will show you if more memory would benifit you.

I said that XP is a better version, not ME!
