I never said I liked 98 more (I hate 98) .. the thread is called &quot;Does win2K suck?&quot; .. as in.. question, not statement.. sure I might have made you all think that in the actuall thread though, I was only asking if you liked it or not, I wasn't asking for flames.. what is it about our society where ppl are so brand loyal that they are gonna start offending ppl and getting mad cause someone said something about a PRODUCT!!!!!.. so yeah.. on with it.

<Redshirt> I ain't using beta ATI drivers for my AIW because they don't do capture, or at least, the few that I tried on my 98 setup didn't.. what up with that, they say they work with the AIW, but then I don't have any multimedia apps working, or capture.. stupid ATI..

yeah.. that's actually what I want.. you see, what happened was that 98 died on me and I had to reinstall.. but I have a couple of gigs of mp3's on the other partition that I want to back up and then repartition everything.. and get that triple boot going.. or just double, linux / 2000 if I can get 2000 working good.. then I'm onto linux.. I hear that you can get some really incredible windows managers for linux, some really cool stuff, animated windows and crap.. sounds pretty cool.. of course, I'm more into the stability and FREENESS of it.. that's pretty sweet.
 
smp: Below are drivers i have found to work with the AIW while all the Multimedia apps working including video capture.

Win98: 3063 drivers

Win2k: 3035 drivers

Niether of these drivers support DX8 and i have yet to find some good DX8 drivers. Both of those drivers were special purpose (beta drivers) i think.
 
hey thanks.. Oh no.. I just realized 😱 that I installed 98 drivers.. I thought that it said win 98/nt/2k on the cd though.. uh oh.. I'm definately NOT an expert!!! 😉

Better yet, since I?m helping you out. Ship your comp to me and I?ll install everything you need, you know, just like an OEM would (i.e. Dell, Gateway). I have heatware so you don?t have to worry about me not shipping it back, lmk? 😉

You could also substitute ?experts?, with power users. 😛

Don?t take it serious man; I?m only poking fun at you. If you did install Win98 drivers in Win2k I believe that would cause some problems.

I'm running an Intel vc820MB with a 196MB of good old 800ecc Rambus memory Seagate 30GB HDD Asus 7700 32MB Video Card, Creative Labs DVD Ram,network to one other computer and I have never to reboot except you install the wrong drivers. If all the other company had come thru with the promise of drivers for w2k. The would almost be perfect. HA HA😉

I think the networking component of W2k is just great. I was able to dial up and get on my works Novell Server very easily with it. Its great in with my home network as well. But lets not honeymoon it, it has some SERIOUS issues as well.

I seriously have to disagree about the networking (at least in one way). It appars that Win2k just DOES NOT like being dual homed. I have a lab set up where I want both a static and private IP on a cluster of machines running Active Directory. The machines are just plain buggy. I can't find any way to make both network work cosistently. I have now just gone to a full NAT solution as nothing else seems to work reasonably well.

I do however agree with the robustness of the Win2K TCP/IP stack.
 
Put it this way, Win2k was built for use with the internet and networking.

Win98SE is just my backup system for what little gaming I do.
If your a gamer then stick with Win98SE for performance.

I maxed out Win98SE with 40 concurrent connections to the net with napster, ftp, mirc, internet explorer, netscape, audiognome, imesh... and that sucked!

Win2k ROCKS for a windoze product.
I have my own ftp server, opennap server, http server, ircd server... all running without a hiccup from Win2k. Sweet!
 
I never even could set up WIN2K with my brand new Radeon 64 VIVO installed. When I went back to my old ASUS SDR GeForce, the setup and installation went very well.

From just one day with Win2K (on a dual boot with Win98SE), I have to say I like it.

Now the Radeon goes back. I am just hoping it was a single defective card
 
You guys have got to remember that NT4/2K is an entirely different beast than DOS/Win9x/ME. The latter is much easier for hardware manufacturers to deal with because they can get away with so much (and then blame the OS when something fails).

NT/2K uses the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) as a go-between for software and the different devices in your system. So, there will naturally be some instances where drivers won't be able to access ALL of the capabilities of hardware as well as Win9x counterparts would. Once manufacturers put some serious effort into Win2K drivers (as opposed to &quot;Let's just get it working&quot😉, then folks will really see which is the better OS.

don?t worry about it you can always try again at a later time. It maybe that Radeon, I would try if I every get the chance. Though I have my girlfriends Win2k system running with an ATI VIVO (latest Win2k drivers).
 
Been using Win2k since the day it reached market. I use computers with Win2k constantly (work and home) and I have had TWO lockups in over a year of use. One lockup happened when I kicked my computer by accident and it fell over giving me a blue screen; the other occurred after using it for 11 days without a reboot and it locked playing CounterStrike. That is a pretty good service record as far as I'm concerned.

To lower boot time, you should try 10k rpm SCSI drives. Makes life a lot...faster.

Blame ATI for crap hardware/drivers, but do not blame Win2k.
 
win2k is a mixed bag, it can be heaven or hell. when the proper drivers are not used, it can suck a lot, more than other os' i've seen. or if your mainboard needs a bios update and you have the wrong revision. i've had a wrong bios revision, and until soyo came out with one that worked, win2k was a disaster, which was primarily why i stuck with NT4 so long. but when the appropriate drivers were available and SP1 was released to cure my dvd lockups, it has been the best OS i've used to date. it just takes a while to reach that computing nirvana, so don't give up yet.
 
Erm, W2k, that must be Windoze. So that must be Micro$hit product.

(In their defense, it is by far the best OS they have every written, but bloated like hell, slow as molasses in Winter.)

I think it's the finest OS out there. It never crashes and it's compatible with all my games. Serves my needs perfectly.
