Does Win XP Pro have the 60Hz refresh rate problem Win2k Pro does?

Will XP get me stuck in 60Hz in Quake3 (well all OpenGL games I think), like Win2k does? It's very annoying...the only way to fix it is to user powerstrip and that mucks up my brightness...

Hmmm so I'm wondering if Win XP Pro will fix this....I've been comparing Win2k Pro vs Win XP Pro (Probably no XP Personal, I plan to make a Dual CPU box later this year, so XP Personal is probably out)...anyways the more I read about XP the more I'm leaning that way...I personally dislike the new UI (I don't like the whole skinning thing just a resource hog IMO) but as far as I can tell you can turn the whole skinning BS right off...so it shouldn't matter...

My last annoyance with Win2k is this problem I get getting stuck in 60Hz in OpenGL games...will XP Pro have this problem?

i dont see why they would integrate that problem into their new os even after knowing the problem, that problem will be fixed with SP2 in win2k

Noriaki, i seen a guy post a fix the other day,sorry i dont remember his name.:(

Here's it is .

<< Search for the monitor description key in your registry. It should be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM.
The key itself begins with "Mode1" so search for that to simplify things.

*EXAMPLE*
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\...\0000\MODES\1600,1200]
"Mode1"="30.0-100.0,0.0-140.0,+,+"

Now, to set it for a minimum refresh of 75, change the first O after the comma to 75 in the "mode1" string

*EXAMPLE*
"Mode1"="30.0-100.0,75.0-140.0,+,+"

It will now use 75 for the default refresh for everything, D3D and OpenGL.
You can set the minimum higher if you know what your monitor can handle.

The only downside is the key required might not exist with the "default monitor" automatically
installed on some systems so update your monitor drivers if needed.

Solve your problem now with this program available Here , this program works awesome! I have been using it for 6 months and have refresh rates of up to 160Hz playing games with a Voodoo3 3000 in Win2k.

Hmmm thanks budman....

I've tried lots to get my refresh rate to work...but not this

*sighs* I just want my damn games to work....I don't want to have to remember all this junk (in case I ever have to re-install you know). I hope they fix this in SP-2...becuase I'm not over-fond of WinXP and I don't want to stay at Win98SE forever...

Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it.

vfrjim:

Thanks...I'll try it when I get home...but the last V3 frequency selector program I tried completely screwed up quake3. Made it all squished down into the corner...

Actually that was only with Default monitor, once I got my monitor drivers installed, Quake3 just refused to run in resolutions I forced to 85Hz

Yes it a shame it doesnt work like win98 does in this way.

This problem & Twinview not extending my desktop feature that Win98 has are the only 2 reasons that i dont run Win2k.

Read the hardware list before you install the V-cntrl, it is not compatable with all vid cards, I just realized it.
