Some of you guys take your love of wikipedia too far. I cannot believe anyone would ever think that i'd be okay to use a source for a paper. Something on this forum amazes me every time i come here.

And if you have access to LexisNexis, don't take that too seriously either...depending on what you're writing about, your best bet (almost always) will be peer-reviewed journals.

Good luck...if you prof hasn't mentioned it yet, then perhaps the class isn't that serious and Wiki won't get you killed.

I had 2 classes this semester where the instructor told us that citing Wikipedia as ONE of our sources would guarantee an F for the paper...EVEN if we had numerous other "Qualified Sources"...

Of course, in each class, there was always someone who tried it...(no...not me...I swear!)

sometimes you need to actually do some work, and not stop at the first link or two, when doing research. Sometimes the really good, accurate stuff is buried 100 pages in.

Sites that are usually the first 1 or 2 hits, are either propagated by popularity, or $$$.

You also need to have your bull-sh1t sifter tuned in. ;)

Wikipedia is just as valid as any other third party source. Banning wikipedia is to keep the pointless easy called "summarize the information of topic X." The problem with wikipedia is topics A-Z have already been summarized.

Do people still take classes that require a certain number of sources?

Uhh... yeah, it's called college. When you don't cite the sources, they tend to not call it a report, they call it "Academic Dishonesty".

WTF kind of school would you go to that doesn't require sources? Or are you just some jackass high-schooler that thinks he's too smart for school? Maybe a drop out? Wither way, you're a douche.

Why not? This is the first time I've ever heard that.

Seriously, your teach hasn't warned you against using Wiki's in your work? Every teacher of mine has shunned Wikipedia. Think about it. You could cite something that someone just randomly entered into that page the night before and it could have absolutely nothing to do with what you were hoping to get out of it. Oh... you read your citations? Doubtful my friend...

what an ass thing to say. you f-ing douchebag.

there were good responses in this thread OP. don't ever use wikipedia as a direct source. if you must, start there and check the sources it cites.

If he was going to use wiki as a source....does he deserve to pass?

you look at wikipedias cited source and if its reliable you cite that. wikipedia isn't a source, its a source for sources.

YOU USE THE SOURCES CITED IN WIKI

EDIT:

well i know wiki is edited by users, but it is an encyclopedia. What alternatives do i have? do i use encycopedia.com?

Nope. You can't cite encyclopedias. Just accept the guaranteed C and move on.

You can cite encyclopedias, but I wouldn't place wikipedia as one.

Encyclopaedias are not scholarly sources. If you are in high school, in a lower level college course, or your professor is unfamiliar with source standards, then you may get away with citing them.
I've never cited them in college, but I don't seem to recall them being taboo in high school. Though back then encyclopedias were in printed form.

you can use them, it just depends on the topic of the paper. If its purely an informational piece, its okay. If its a scholarly topic, as are almost all college-level papers, then no, it won't work.
For example, I used an encyclopedia for a paper on Erwin Rommel. That kind of topic its almost necessary too, since there aren't really scholarly journals covering it.
For my assignments in English, they were all analytical papers and to even write the paper you had to use scholarly journals, let alone cite it. You could look at an encyclopedia all day and never get anything useful to cite.

The same can happen with any source.

I don't know how it is in other schools, but in my high school, almost every teacher specifies in the syllabus that Wikipedia is NOT to be used as a source. I think it's because of the fact that it's not "official" and edited by the general public.

wikipedia is general knowledge, you dont cite general knowledge. If there are pictures, you cite the original author of the picture.

Christian fundamentalists use the Bible as a history, biology, and anthropology textbook, so I'd say go ahead and use Wikipedia as a source, as long as the article clearly states that it is correct and infallible.

To reiterate what others have stated - do NOT quote Wikipedia as a source. Maybe look up its sources.

never cite wikipedia, never even use it at the basis of research or major contributor of infomation going into a paper.

if you have to cite something thats on wiki, scroll to the bottom and look through the links cited at the bottom to find your info, and thats if you trust them sites as well. the internet is invariably a useful place and great source of infomation, but its also a source of mis-infomation.

i try to keep internet sources down to a minimum, unless they are properly respected sites i try find what i want in the library, where the internet has the edge is that the infomation tends to be newer and more frequently updated
