Not really, as long as its a decent school.

The majority of CEOs in the U.S. went to second-tier schools (just below the Ivys or other 'prestigious' school). In reality, no one cares how smart you are. It's all about how much you're willing to work.

unless you know for sure you will be going to grad school, it does matter.

for grad school, get into the best one you can if that's the case.

ack. Grad school matters? What about post doc? :)

Grad school matters far more than undergrad. Most undergrad curriculums are fairly standard, but this is defenitely not the case later on.

yep. Go to the best grad school you can. Especially in academia, that follows you around. Ph.D. from MIT or Stanford is always good to have next to your name :D

If you're just staying on the undergraduate level, I suppose an undergrad degree from a lesser known school could hurt you a little bit if you're looking to move out of the region, where people haven't heard of your school. A degree from a well-known school (or a school that's particularly known for a specific program) could open more doors in getting that first job 2000 miles away. But then internships and co-ops can put the guy from the smaller school right back in contention. After your career is established, who cares.

No.

I believe that people that think there is a difference read way too much into the alleged "Prestige" of a school.

yes it does.

undergrad does matter, unless you went to grad school in which case where you went to grad school matters a lot and your undergrad is irrelevant.

Undergrad plays no part in where you get in to grad? That's news to me.

maybe i wasn't clear. if you went to a small state school, yet graduated from Harvard with an MBA, all that would matter would be the latter.

I think what merc meant is that where you undergrad will affect how easily you get into the bigger grad schools... I'm curious about it myself since I graduate from a small state school in May.
