Does watching violence on TV cause one to become violent?

My brother-in-law doesn't own a TV because he doesn't want his kids to see violence.

Most people grow that grow up watching violence on TV don't become violent so this postion seems rather ridiculous to me.

Seems to me that there are a lot more obvious causes of violence.

Anyone disagree?

i have been watching horror/violent movies, played violent games and read horror books for most of my life. I have never went out and shot or murdered anyone.

I think that blaiming movies, games, comics or tv is scape goat for lax parenting.

Considering how you seem to think that what one watches can have an influence in their lives ("undermines what they learn at home, church, and school"), I'm suprised you don't agree with your brother in law.

for the record, i don't believe that TV violence creates violent people.

People were soooo peaceful and nonviolent before tv, so it has to be the cause....

yeah those crusades? pfft they just gave the non-believers flowers and lset them on there way!

IMHO....

Lifestyles that are protrayed on teevee often change the perception of children on what is and is not socially acceptable. However, I think that a responsibile adult to explain what the child is seeing is much more important then the actual content.

🙂

I believe that certain people can be desensitized to violence by watching tv, playing video games, etc. to the point that it will affect their real lives.

Yes, there were no wars or other atrocities committed before the invention of the television. I think the Honeymooners was the beginning of the end of the human race. Won't be long now...

Hell yeah! Just look at me! BANG BANG POW POW, hahahhaha, you're dead, now let me cut your fingers off and stuff them down your throat.

And no, I have not been taking my medication lately.

"My brother-in-law doesn't own a TV because he doesn't want his kids to see violence."

Fear of children being violent adults isn't the only reason. There are better experiences for children than watching violence, and the violence that takes place on tv is largely a lie, and kids don't need to be lied too.

your brother is hurting his children more then helping them. they are going to leave completely sheltered lives and when they have to face the world on their own they will not knwo how to interpert or handle anything.

Yea, because TV is such a valuable tool for learning.

maybe not become violent, but know how to harm someone.

e.g. you may watch american history X and find a new way of killing someone by bashing his head on the pavement.

I think you're comparing apples and oranges. It obviosuly has an influence, but I don't think that it's going to make you go out an off someone.

its a tool that parents can use in many ways to help teach their kids about society. TV is part of mainstream culture wheter or not you like it or not.

I saw a study, with videos, that showed different groups of young boys watching a violent show on television, then being allowed to play with a large variety of toys.

When told the violence was real, the boys invariably played with the toy guns afterward...

When told the violence was make-believe, the boys were just as likely to play with the toy guns as with any other toy. (race cars, etc.)

That study was shown to me many years ago... I have not seen another study that took into account the context of the violence that was being viewed. But, I think it explains why as games become more realistic, there are more problems (or more studies that indicate problems) with the violence being a stronger factor in a child becoming violent.

(I hate the flow of that last sentence, but don't want to edit it.)

only if the child has violent tendencies to begin with. children will always emulate what they see on t.v., etc. if the child isnt violent to begin with, or the parent takes the time to explain its just fantasy and not real or condoned behavior, then i dont think so.

Ever hear of books?

Teach them about society? Mabey if they went out and experienced it instead of sitting in their 8-4-2.5 colonial in suburbia watching TV, they would get a better grasp on REALITY.

Seems as if you watched too much in your day.
