Does voice activated software always work poorly?

Ive just been playing with some TV remote control software for my axim. You can record your voice for commands like turning the TV on and off and changing channels etc. The damn thing doesnt work half the time and you have to shout to get anything to work. Do pieces of software like this always work so poorly with a voice?

It depends. My Microsoft Game Voice worked very well, but it was for a full computer(ie powerful) using a good quality mic, two things an Axim would lack.

my axim is 624mhz, but the real problem that I think is that the microphone is so far away from your face. Youd really need a bluetooth headset to be effective I think

Microsoft's stuff, no. IBM's stuff, no. Nuance's stuff, maybe.

My stuff, YES 🙂

(see prior threads for references to my research)

my last cell phone, the Samsung A620/VGA1000 (sprint), had already built in voice command that worked like a charm. My new one, the Toshiba VM4050, makes you record the names, and then does a piss-poor job of working correcctly

yea, thats what this software does. you record the name and then repeat it. Its totally useless if there is any background noise and you have to shout half the time. As a universal remote it works great though 🙂
