Does Verizon's "New Every 2" deal require a contract renewal?

I'm up for a new phone with Verizon in March, however my contract isn't up until June/July and i've been wanting to switch over to sprint for the cheaper service. Does the "New Every 2" deal requrie that I renew my contract?

EDIT: Looked at my VZW account and the New Every 2 shows that I get a $30 credit. Is that it? 30 bucks off a $300-500 phone?

It does require a renewal and it's 30$ off what you pay on an upgrade not the full price of a phone.

Gotcha. But since I want to get the hell away from verizon, waiting for the upgrade doesn't make much sense. Better to get an android now and switch over when the contract expires.

Can anyone recommend a decent Android phone that won't break the bank and will work on Verizon's network?

Find a used original Droid. Still pretty good specs, plenty available (been a year since launch), will give you something to play with and get used to Android with.

And in the future, to curse locked down handsets.

Is the hardware going to be powerful enough to run Gingerbread?

The question is when, not if. Devs are waiting for some more things to be released and hacked.
There are some alpha builds, but most of things won't work. Just proof of concept...for now.

Yeah, you want OG Droid. I expected secondhand Incredible and Fascinate prices to be reasonable, but they're not.

edit: Oh yeah, don't forget to switch to Google Voice and cancel texting. Help defray the cost.

A. It's the original Droid or Droid 1.
B. No, unless that's changed recently you can't port your number to google voice.

Alright. What about Froyo?

Froyo (2.2) has been released as an official update and pushed out through Verizon.
There are also modded ROMs that involve rooting that offer many Froyo builds including the latest AOSP builds straight from Google.

So with google voice I'd still have to keep my voice plan and my data plan but somehow I can get rid of the texting part?
